Prediction from 17 years ago: AM Radio is going digital

"AM radio is going digital."

Sounds like a provocative headline, right? Except this is an NBC News article I stumbled upon - and it's from 2003. Seems like the author's prediction of the next big thing never really caught on - although there's at least one all digital AM in Maryland that I'm not sure anyone can really hear - WWFD. (They're also on FM, so that's presumably where they get an audience.)

All that wonder that the guy expresses ended up going nowhere in the U.S. for the most part.

If the FCC and CRTC had done with digital what they did with UHF in the 60s and required all new radios, at least all new car radios, to be equipped to receive it then the transition would have happened.
