Rogers Considers Taking Down The Dome

Front page of the Globe and Mail this morning that Rogers is considering leveling the SkyDome (Rogers Centre) and build a new stadium with real grass and, you guessed it...CONDOS and retail!

Re: Rogers Considers Taking Down The Dome

That whole company needs to screw off.  Rogers is doing absolutely no good to anybody except their greedy and unreasonable shareholders.

Re: Rogers Considers Taking Down The Dome

Rogers only owns the actually physical building structure which is the Dome / Rogers Centre.
Rogers does not own the property on which it is situated.

That is Federal land overseen by Canada Lands Company and the land is leased to Rogers.

Re: Rogers Considers Taking Down The Dome

It's interesting that that the proposed new stadium will be smaller and with real grass.  This could mean new facility just for baseball, and are they planning for any type of removable roof?   This apparently is only a small part of a massive multi billion dollar development planned for downtown.  Details are to come at some point in the new year. Rogers and Brookfield Asset Management have been in talks with all three levels of government for some time.

Rogers is also behind a large new downtown development currently being built in Mississauga, near the Marilyn Monroe Towers.

Re: Rogers Considers Taking Down The Dome

In its heyday, the SkyDome was a major improvement over Exhibition Stadium.  In the early 90s, the Jays had no
problem getting the big crowds especially for decisive games. Whatever structure replaces it needs a retractable roof
simply because our climate on many days during the baseball season is not conducive for enjoying the games in
comfort. Although it is not a traditional ball park, I will hate to see it go.  Play ball...regardless of the weather.

Re: Rogers Considers Taking Down The Dome

This is funny if the CP story is correct.  The Globe and Mail scooped everyone on this, including Rogers Media.  In fact Sportsnet radio was talking about the story at length earlier today.  Didn't the G&M talk to anyone at Rogers to fact check the story?  Might be a few red faces right now at "Canada's National Newspaper" and Rogers Media for that matter!

Re: Rogers Considers Taking Down The Dome

It won't come down any time soon. Rogers can't afford it - in fact they've recently done mass layoffs just to stay solvent.

It was one of the last of the concrete monoliths. They were behind the curve as the trend had begun for retro ballparks. I've never seen a ballpark with less character than Rogers Centre, except maybe for Tropicana Field and the Kingdome. It's just a giant info-commercial for Rogers Communications. And I wouldn't feed the food there to a dog.

Re: Rogers Considers Taking Down The Dome

I vaguely recall taxpayer subsidies...

Anyhow, funny that this comes out when attendance is below zero...
