TSN 1050 Toronto announces new program The Lunch With Andi Petrillo

Same host with a one hour timeslot instead of two.

TSN 1050 or Bell if they were on the ball should put Roger Ashby's oldies show on their schedule and give it some promo. Get Roger in for an interview on one of their talk shows and have some fun. TSN 1050 has lots of air time right now with not a lot going on and Ashby's show would be a nice change for three hours a week.

They gave those rights to Evanov for 88.5, and likely included exclusivity amongst stations rated in the market.

This is a terrible idea for about a dozen different reasons.

Andi knows her stuff, and depending on who is in the other chair*, Leaf's Lunch, the Lunch, is a great escape from other radio stations "the Big 3" content, covid, what Ford is and isn't doing, and the tire fire of U.S. politics.
*in broadcasting as in hockey, some guys and gals who play the wing think they could play centre.

Prod Guy.. please....about a dozen reasons?? I'll make it easy for you, name four.
TSN 1050 has got nothing to lose and lots to gain running Ashby's show. Looks like for exclusivity reasons according to Aaron won't be happening anyway. But the actual idea is beyond brilliant..
1. WTF does '60s music have to do with sports-focused programming?
2. Ashby airs requests from all over the map . . . FM 88.5 has exclusivity to him?
3. Are Cdns not already getting enough Guess Who, Andy Kim and Stampeders material?
4. As above re David Clayton Thomas, Paul Anka & Gord Lightfoot

Agreed....having Ashby come onto a sports station to play or chat about oldies tunes makes less than zero sense...most of the listeners weren't alive when Roger was in his heyday...heck even some of their parents weren't around when these tunes were first played....

Not to mention, music on AM is dead! I think you would find even if 1050 jumped back to OLDIES, it would never pay off for them ratings wise or even client wise.. Sports typically targets 18 to 54 Male.. I don't think the under 50 crowd is wanting any music on their sports station, not to mention wants their sports station to play blocks of music. If this was to happen, I think Fan would win more than they already do.
Roger's show is on Orybit Media, which is Bell's syndicated arm. I'm sure they are doing just fine giving it to stations that sign the agreement to air it, including Jewel 88.5

So why cut in half the airtime of a successful production?

For the Toronto market, yes most likely.

'Wilbur' Watters was awful. Never had anything even remotely insightful to say, just pontificated as though he had some imaginary inside track, which was usually based upon his very short time as assistant Leafs GM several years before. No surprise that he has been absent from the airwaves since.
To each his own. I liked what he had to say.

Wanted to get back to all of those that doubt the idea of running Roger Ashby's Oldies show is a brilliant idea for TSN 1050.
geo first off you have 2.5 reasons (can't count 3 and 4 separately since they essentially are the same). And reason number two with Ashby's requests all over the map, don't really understand why that matters. You do get half a point for the possibility of 88.5 exclusivity for the Toronto market.
Anyone who listens to the show would notice that Ashby handles the difficult task of cancon on an oldies show very well. He doesn't overplay cancon artists at all (in 8 months I have only heard Anne Murray twice) and I really like some of the obscure but still worthy cancon that he plays, in addition to all of the other lesser known "B" hits. Some maybe don't care for this, but judging by the requests from the listeners many do seem to like it.
Music is dead on AM- True it is pretty much, except for oldies. Many feel these songs sound best on AM. And what better place than on the home of Toronto's heritage top 40 station, that featured the original and very popular Sunday Morning Oldies program 30 years ago? And to have the original host, Roger Ashby, pure gold! Also this gives a tip of the hat to CHUM, Canada's original 24 hour rock and roll station, and one of the first in North America.
WTF does 60's music have to do with sports-focused programing? Nothing. The same way that any block programming has nothing to do with a stations format. TSN 1050 has 189 hours a week to fill on their schedule. Three hours per week is not going to harm the sports format whatsoever. And TSN 1050 has quite a few hours in the week with not much going on. Also this gives the station the opportunity to sell to other advertisers that normally wouldn't be on TSN 1050.
Most listeners weren't alive when Roger was in his heyday, even some parents weren't around when these songs were played- True but most listeners, even some of their parents were also not alive the last time the Leafs won the cup. And Ashby is well known by most of the audience since he was mornings on CHUM until December 2018.
I don't think the under 50 crowd want to hear music on their sports station or blocks of music- It's only three hours a week out of 189 hours. So unless the under 50 audience is listening all the time, they likely will never hear the show. However it would attract many new listeners to TSN 1050, at least for the three hours maybe longer. Some regular listeners of TSN 1050 under 54 likely would enjoy the program too regardless.
Having Ashby come on a sports station to play and chat about oldies tunes makes less than zero sense. If they were to run the show, it would make sense to have Roger on one of the talk shows initially just to promote that the program is on TSN 1050. I am sure they could still have a conversation about sports as well with him. And most of TSN 1050's listeners know who Roger Ashby is, as mentioned above.
Also another big benefit for TSN 1050 would be the fact that they would almost be guaranteed some free press about this. "Roger Ashby returns to his original home for the Roger Ashby Oldies Show". I am sure The Star, Sun and certainly Bell TV stations would give this some coverage and this gives TSN 1050 some much needed exposure. And of course the possibility of new revenue. It all comes down to how they handle this, and to have some fun with it. Maybe a little creativity?
But if 88.5 has exclusivity for Toronto, then it won't happen... .hhhmmm maybe TSN 1150 CKOC?? But only if 92.1 doesn't have the same arrangement with the Hammer!

Conrad Black is reportedly a h-u-g-e fan of "My Way", written by Paul Anka for Frank Sinatra so you'll really have to get the National Post to sign on to maximize return on your & Roger's investments, respectively. Speaking of which, is Ashby aware that you're hoping to commit him to this?

My comments are only that of a radio fan and retired broadcasting/newspaper guy. For all I know Roger could be wishing that I shut the hell up!! And yes a few SOWNY members likely feel the same way as well (actually maybe more than a few!)

Cons
1. Oldies on a sports station turns dilutes the station's brand which it is still trying to build.
2. Music on AM sucks because of the poor fidelity.
3. Sports fans in the demo don't know or care who Roger Ashby is.
4. It breaks format.
5. The second you break format on 1050 you lose 100 percent of your core audience to 590, your direct competitor.
6. The second you return to the format you lose 100 percent of the audience you just had.
7. Advertisers on a sports station won't buy an oldies show.
8. Music on AM doesn't get ratings.
9. Music on AM doesn't get listeners.
10. Oldies attracts an older audience whose buying habits are locked in, for the most part, which isn't desirable for advertisers. If it was 1050 Chum would still exist.
11. Doing anything that resembles the brand you killed twice is a giant step in the wrong direction.
12. He's on another station already.
13. The show would need to be pre-empted for play by play.
14. Extra training would be required for sports sales people to sell oldies.
15. Extra sales materials would need to be developed.
16. Sales reps will be spending time selling something other than their core product, which isn't productive.
17. Callers on sports shows will be asking where the oldies are, and vice versa, creating negative reaction on your own airwaves.
18. TSN Radio offers cross promotion with TSN's TV channels, website, app, and smart speaker updates. Oldies doesn't.
19. Extra clocks would have to be created.
20. Extra logs would have to be generated.
21. Socan reports would have to be generated.
22. Someone has to op it if it's live, reducing the amount of money to be made.
23. If it isn't live, someone has to load it in each week.
24. Listeners you don't want will be happy for a couple of hours week until they turn on you, wanting to know why you don't bring back oldies 24/7.
Pros

I think you make some great points Prod Guy, and I agree with most of them. But there are exceptions to every rule and here's one of them.
On Saturday nights, WABC in New York, once a legendary Top 40 rocker and maybe the most famous radio station in the world, airs Cousin Brucie's all request show, playing oldies on the conservative-oriented talk station. It's been such a success, they added an extra hour to it last weekend, and it's now followed by two more hours of music in a new show hosted by Tony Orlando.
It could be argued that the demos are better in this case, with the station skewing older, but paying homage to its own heritage seems to be working out just fine for them.
#25 - taking time to prepare for a show every day would delay completion of Ashby's much-anticipated autobiography

Prod Guy congratulations on all of your hard work. It is a good list and you put some thought into the response.
Most of what you say is correct, and on paper it wouldn't necessarily make much sense to run an oldies show. I could quibble or debate with a number of your points but have already mentioned them in the previous response so I won't bore you and everyone with them all over again.
The actual work points you referred to like new clocks, logs someone loading in the material and SOCAN etc. are part of doing work and business. All of these wouldn't actually increase the workload much at all, just replacing it with something else. In terms of sales, it gives the sales reps something else to sell on the station and would not be a negative. Adding a new show like this can be the opposite with the chance to sell to new accounts. Also it would make the program more appealing to national advertisers, with better coverage of the Toronto market.
We will need to see if TSN actually gets some decent ratings in the coming months/years. I am surprised why they don't do a lot better since they aren't a bad sports station but they seem to be stuck at the bottom of the ratings in Toronto. Building a brand for sports radio shouldn't take 8 or 9 years. They have had the format and TSN branding since 2011, and like oldies it is their second shot at this format. With the upheaval at Rogers and 590 dropping so much of their key talent, TSN should have been able to capitalize on this but haven't.
Also I don't believe that TSN's audience is that fragile, that they would leave in droves if they happen to hear a Beatles song on the station or caught part of Ashby's show. The program is only three hours long and depending when it was scheduled most of the regular audience would likely never hear it anyway, but a lot of new listeners would. And TSN 1050 absolutely needs more listeners.

Well, the obvious answer to this is to have Ashby do a sports segment during his oldies show!
Let's see---Backfield In Motion by Mel & Tim or maybe The Race Is On by Jack Jones.
How about Games People Play by The Spinners?
It's All In The Game by Tommy Edwards?
Or Centerfield by John Fogerty.
Talk about a musical "score...."
