CKWR Kitchener 7 Year Renewal

The Waterloo Region Record reports today that Canada's first community radio station has received a 7 year broadcast renewal from the CRTC.  For the past 15 years the station had been receiving short term license renewals for non compliance.

The station failed to provide financial statements for many years, failed to provide logger tapes and was falling short on cancon for specialty and ethnic shows. Over the last few years the company was on the brink of closing and there was speculation that CKWR's license might not be renewed at all.

The CRTC is satisfied with the changes which include a new management team, better staff training and also fired the individual in charge of financial records and statements.  Over the last 5 months CKWR has lost almost 70% of their advertisers due to COVID and needed to give their staff crash courses on how to do their programming from home.

Upgrades to the transmitter will begin next month which will increase their coverage area on 98.5.  The station will be heard as far away as Hamilton, Woodstock/London and Wingham in the north.

CKWR bills itself as the regions only three format radio- Adult Alternative, Specialty and Multicultural.  The 45 year old community outlet has also been nominated as favourite radio station in this years Waterloo Region Record Readers Choice Awards.

Sorry I couldn't send the article, The Record has a new revamped website and I couldn't seem to link the story.

Re: CKWR Kitchener 7 Year Renewal

Is this the same station from several years ago that was supposed to go off the air because students would rather have a "free" sandwich?  What ever happened to that station?
(the claim back then was that it was costing the cost of a sandwich per student to run the station)

Occasionally CKWR  causes minor interference on WKSE in the GTA.

No that was a university radio station,  I believe that was CKMS 102.7 which is the University of Waterloo.  Currently it receives no funding from students.  The station recently moved to 102.7 which improved their signal.

Radio Laurier is the station for Wilfred Laurier University and is internet only. Conestoga College has CJIQ which broadcasts at 88.3, 4,000 watts and is run by the broadcast program at the college.  This station is the most commercial sounding of the three with an alternative rock format and has a local coverage area about 60km outside of K/W.  Distant signal would reach Oakville, Hamilton, Grimsby, Port Dover, and Mount Forest in the north.

Unless my memory has failed, long-time SOWNY and Quad Cities poster Mark Irvine was an on-air personality at one or more of these facilities.  Whatever happened to that fellow?   He always had strong but interesting views on the industry.

Re: CKWR Kitchener 7 Year Renewal

Seems like CKWR is getting a significant power and / or antenna height increase. Does anyone know the specifics?

That's not how I remember it.  He hijacked nearly every thread on this board and we lost a lot of good people for a time.  His opinions were interesting but he was a complete jerk.  He's probably trying convince someone he's rich right now, because that seeped into nearly every one of his posts.  People who have tell people what they are, are rarely what they say they are.  He was lousy on air too.

H-m-m-m-m --- a fill-in personality never misses an opportunity to inform AM 640 listeners that he flies a twin-engine 'plane and lives in a multi-million $$ home; could they be related (?)

Re: CKWR Kitchener 7 Year Renewal

CKWR had a Power Increase approved by the CRTC in 2003 to 27 kW H Pol only. It was never built and they lost the approval several years ago. The current issue has them running at reduced power  due to a bad feed line.

He was a troll. We don't need his kind.
