What Happened to The Voice?

One show that still gets great ratings on NBC is The Voice. On March 30th it clicked in with 9.8 million viewers and was by far the number one show of the evening on US network TV.  In Canada on CTV2 with a simulcast?  Not even in the top 30.  CTV2 is a secondary network but does show up in the top 30 from time to time.   Really surprising at such a gap.

The finale of the Good Doctor on Mar 30th was the number one program that week in Canada with 3,033 million viewers.  On ABC the show came in at 7,707 million,  two million fewer viewers than The Voice.

Done right, The Voice is also the best "Social distancing" show.

Re: What Happened to The Voice?

You're not really comparing apples to apples. The Canadian figures Numeries releases for free are weekly charts that combine both live viewership and 7 days of DVR viewing. The U.S. figures you used are live + same day. Live events typically do poorly in DVR viewership (people watch as they happen), while scripted shows flourish.

Once you factor in the same amount of DVR viewership in the United States, The Good Doctor was also seen by more people than The Voice. The latter does seem to be disproportionately unpopular here. That can be somewhat explained by its broadcast on a second-tier network, though it might also be hurt by the fact that it is a U.S. competition show. There is no local angle. Last year's NBA Finals did poorly down south because one of the teams was in a market in a different country.

So, long story short, the voice is so last year and the Masked singer is where it's at today, with far greater ratings by more than a single mile...

Re: What Happened to The Voice?

All your points are correct Retaw and I don't disagree with any of them. Just seems odd that the Voice which not that long ago did very well in the ratings in Canada has just sunk like a rock this year and hasn't been in the Top 30 in weeks.  The updated ratings in Variety, which are more comparable to Numeris make the difference even more dramatic.  Even though the show is on CTV 2, they do have a simsub which should have helped more with the numbers.

Maybe music competition shows have seen their day.  The new American Idol also on CTV2 is not showing up in the Top 30 here either but does ok for ABC in the US.  The Masked Singer is really clicking in Canada now after a slower start a few years ago on CTV as compared to FOX.

CTV had initially indicated that they would bring back Canadian Idol in 2010;  the show was cancelled after six seasons in 2008, and still drawing good ratings.  Too bad they didn't bring it back for another year or two.  I always thought their version was actually better musically than the original American Idol on FOX.

The contestants played their own instruments and the music choices were more rock/pop oriented rather than so many "vocal gymnastic" slow ballads on the US show.  Also the great Orin Isaacs was an excellent choice to head up the amazing band that CTV used for the show.

In Quebec TVA has a French version La Voix, which gets huge ratings.  Modelled almost exactly after the Voice, with the competitors singing a fair amount of songs in English. I have only seen bits and pieces but TVA does a real good job producing the show.
