CBC Radio 1, AC & Country The Top Formats Tuned In Canada In 2019

The CRTC released its annual comprehensive Communications Monitoring Report on Tuesday. It's filled with an incredible amount of info, covering TV, Radio, cable, telecommunications and more in this country during 2019.

The thing I always like to spotlight here is the radio format list, which shows CBC Radio 1, though not technically a format, as getting the highest tuning share. Adult Contemporary is close behind, followed by Country. Classic Hits and Talk are next.

You can read the report - if you have several hours - here. Otherwise here's the format list for English Canada.

Sometimes the highest tuning share means absolutely nothing in an advertising business like radio.

RadioWiz & RadioQuiz are NOT the same person.

Alternately, sometimes advertising means absolutely nothing to the highest tuning share in radio.

Exactly. Radio is an advertising business, but not exclusively.

Interesting that a single station (one CBC Radio in Toronto proper) clobbers entire formats.

I believe at one time, maybe still,  Montreal was the only major Canadian city in which the CBC didn't "clobber entire formats."

Interesting. Language issue? I wonder if both CBC Radio One and Premiere Chaine (or whatever it's called now) were combined?

Actually, there's a separate list for French Canada, and it shows the CBC isn't #1.

CBC doesn't do nearly as well in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and as you mentioned, Montreal.

Looks like overall commercial radio in Canada is doing alright. Revenues and listenership are down slightly, but then how could they not be with so many more options.   PBIT is a little over 18% and while not a license to print money like before, radio seems to be handling the changes in technology and the marketplace better than other traditional media like newspapers, magazines and television.

Here's an interesting chart, this time for TV and who's watching what and where. If you believe the numbers, while the revenue at traditional broadcast stations is down, regular TV remains the most watched.

So what are most of us watching? The list below shows the breakdown, but to no one's surprise, U.S. shows still top the list.

English-language and ethnic services, all of Canada (excluding Quebec French-language market)

Yes the charts are interesting. Notice no viewership for Canadian game shows in 2018.  Likely because nobody was producing any local daily game shows.

And not surprising US shows top the list for non Canadian comedy and drama, entertainment and human interest, however this wouldn't be exclusive to US programming, but the majority by far.

Canadian drama and comedy, general entertainment categories are what you would expect in terms of the percent. Fact is there is much much more non Canadian content offered in these categories in a typical week and especially prime time so the chart is simply reflecting this. It would be a question of quantity as much as quality in this case.
