Primetime Impeachment Debate Won't Get Live Network TV Coverage

It's an historic discussion bound to be filled with fireworks. But if you want to see it, it looks like you'll have to tune into one of the cable channels. Most of the American over-the-air networks have said they won't cover Wednesday's latest round of impeachment developments live. That's an interesting decision, after the hours and hours and hours they all spent interrupting morning television over the past few weeks.

It's something that never would have happened in the old Nixon and Clinton impeachment debate days, long before there was streaming and cable news.

What fascinates me about this is that in the past, this would have been considered an event so historic, no  primetime shows would have been put above such a spectacle. It's another sign of how much the times, TV and our options to watch it, have all changed.

ABC and CBS have a full schedule tonight of "Fall Finales" and how could one possibly pass up Ellen's Greatest Night Of Giveaways on NBC?

That's why there are news networks. Tonight's broadcast, however interesting to many, has a fairly limited audience. What would be the point of all 4 traditional networks covering the proceedings along with the news channels and some specialty networks? Unless there is a football game on, ratings for CBS, NBC, ABC and FOX in prime time are already terrible, so coverage of the initial impeachment tonight would make the situation even worse. And to top it off very limited time for commercial breaks, so next to no revenue.

Was there really that much morning/afternoon coverage weeks ago? As I recall what coverage there was on the first few days was really cut back quickly and didn't seem that extensive on the 4 networks.   I get Detroit TV so maybe some of their stations didn't opt for as much daytime coverage.

People get confused about impeachment and removal. The House or Congress votes on articles impeachment and if the house gets the votes to impeach things move to the senate for a trial for removal. There has actually never been a president that has been impeached and removed. Both Clinton and Andrew Johnson were impeached but not removed. That scenario is likely for Trump because the Republicans have a 53 to 47 majority in the senate and you need more than a bare majority in the senate to remove.

Nixon resigned before he was impeached  although the impeachment process was well underway when he resigned,
