Radio For The Deaf

No, that headline isn't a joke.

It's a new idea from a station in India, of all places, designed to allow the deaf or those with hearing difficulties to "experience" and follow along with radio. In essence, it's an app that allows users to place their smartphones by the speaker and have whatever is being said on air transcribed on the screen, thereby allowing them to follow what's going on.

I'm not sure if this has ever been done before and I have doubts about whether the concept will catch on - radio isn't likely something deaf people are used to using - but it's an interesting idea. I wonder what happens if music is being broadcast. Does it also transcribe the lyrics?

I certainly like the name they've come up with for it, though - Frequen-see.

Frequen-see brings radio to the deaf

Re: Radio For The Deaf

This can be done now easily. Most smartphones have some sort of audio transcriber baked into the OS. From there, it's a snap to project the text back onto the phone,

When I'm at the gym, I can actually forget I'm working when I watch the stupid stuff the TV closed captioning comes up with.
