  • 1929 WOWO-AM, Indiana returns to air, 1 day after transmitter burns down
  • 1954 The BBC broadcasts its first television news bulletin
  • 1961 KUSD TV channel 2 in Vermillion, SD (PBS) begins broadcasting

There's a great six part history of WOWO, one of my all time favourite rock stations in the Top 40 era. Worth your time if you have an interest in this kind of thing. Parts 3 & 4 cover the rock years.

This is an awesome listen.  I remember living in Cayuga during my teens.  In 1983, I recall the night Karen Carpenter died, and I was listening to WOWO and KYW, and bouncing back and forth between the stations.  Whenever I hear the song "Heart and Soul" bu Huey and the News, I always think of WOWO, because I heard it on WOWO during a DX listen.

WOWO's night signal ain't what it used to be thanks to the station being purchased by the owners of WLIB in NYC back in 1994. Then only a daytimer, their only chance for 24 hour operation was to buy the Ft. Wayne station and reduce its night power. [9800 watts, I think] WLIB currently operates at 30000 watts at night.
