Long Unused 1490 Frequency May Soon Be Back In Toronto

I missed this one along the way, but a few weeks ago, CHTO - the Greek station on the so-called X-band at 1690 AM, applied for a repeater signal at 1490, so it can better reach Etobicoke, Brampton and Mississauga at night. Its current power is 6K day and 1K night. What's unusual about the proposed addition is that it will be stronger at night than during the daylight hours, an almost unheard of scenario.

If the request is granted, CHTO would occupy two spots on the dial, with 1490 being all of 23 watts during the day, while upping the power to 770 after the evening pattern change, The location for the new TX would be 1785 Matheson Boulevard, appropriately enough the roof of a Greek Orthodox Church.

Wasn't 1490 the original home of CHYM in Kitchener a long, long time ago? You could never really get it at all in Toronto. And next to 1450, it's one of the worst propogating signals on the AM dial. So I'm really not sure how much coverage the station will gain if they get what they're asking for. No timeframe yet for a decison from the CRTC.

Aren't they also on SCA?  I believe they're still on 99.9fm but I can't be bothered to check

Madness takes its toll.  Please have exact change.

CKCR AM 1490

It was responsible for a huge economic boom in quality radio sales, as citizens ignored CKCR in order to catch Gordon Sinclair every noon from 1010 CFRB

Re: Long Unused 1490 Frequency May Soon Be Back In Toronto

Would it not be possible for CHTO to get a directional nighttime signal beamed east/west to cover their problem reception areas? Using the 1490 frequency at night is a waste of time. There are six "local" frequency's on the AM band. 1230,1240,1340,1400,1450 and 1490. They are called gravyard frequencys at night for a reason. With 100+ stations licensed to each frequency, interference is so intense, nothing can be heard. 1230 WECK, 1340 WLVL, and 1400 WWWS all have fair signals in parts of the GTA  during daylight hours. At night, not a chance.                                                                                                        Also, CHYM was indeed on 1490 at one time. Originally, they were CKCR. The switch to CHYM came Feb 25, 1965. The move from 1490 to 570 took place June 21, 1978.
