Frustration Abounds As Sports Trumps Trump On CBS

I've waited through months of NFL games that never ended on time.

I've sat through golf tournaments that went into endless overtime playoffs, waiting for a winner.

But this is a new last straw for me. I admit I couldn't care less about U.S. college basketball and that there are many hundreds of thousands who do. And that it pays a lot of bills for the network. But on Sunday, a game that was laughably scheduled to be over by 7 PM was only in the 2nd quarter(!) by that time, and once again all of CBS's Sunday line-up was delayed and delayed and delayed.

So with the Jewish holiday of Passover on the horizon, it seems only fair to ask, "why is this night different from all other nights?"

And the answer is that this night, CBS's venerable flagship 60 Minutes was supposed to air an extremely hyped interview with porn star Stormy Daniels, amidst speculation that what's contained in that tete-a-tete could have consequences for Donald Trump's already tempestuous presidency. But instead of starting when any normal person can find it - at 7 - it now looks like the start time could, be oh I don't know. how's 8:36 PM? Maybe 9:47? Who knows?

Look, this sports overrun problem will never, ever go away, to my ever-lasting irritation. But you might think they'd find a way to air a show that could be of major importance to what happens to the most powerful man in the world on time. But I guess the NCAA comes first.

(I wound up listening to it on WCBS-AM instead. Luckily, it was coming in over the air, because CBS insists on geoblocking everything that moves.)

But God how I miss the days when the schedule actually mattered. Especially when it involves a show that may actually matter.
</rant>

[Update: "60 Minutes" finally started at 7:36 PM. But the point stands. By my count, there have only been two or three Sundays in an entire season where a CBS show has actually started on time. While I can't discount the drawing power of sports, what a disservice to its viewers and the fans of the shows that follow. Perhaps they should just cancel all regular programming until 8 PM on that day and finally get what is arguably the most watched night of TV back to some semblance of a normal schedule.]
</2nd and final rant>

Yes, of course it was a complete overreaction. It's the end of a very long season of sports overruns that never seems to stop with this particular network. I think next week things are actually on time for once. Although knowing CBS, they'll find a way to delay the start of prime time somehow!

We now return you to our regular complaining, already in progress.

Perhaps a letter writing campaign is in order.

Waste of time. CBS doesn't care about those viewers because sports gets a bigger audience and delivers more advertising bucks than any regular series. So it just continues to frustrate people every week. And I'm not alone. Read sites like TV Line or TV Insider and you'll find constant references to this issue.

My suggestion is to just not program the 7-8 PM slot on Sundays, because this happens almost every single week for months on end. It's a real disservice to regular viewers. And it hurts some of their hit series. "Madam Secretary," for instance, is seen as a quality show by most critics. But its numbers are way down, because it's on at a different time every week. They did the same thing to "Elementary."

Plus when it ends after 11 PM on what is a back-to-work-and-school-night, a lot of eyeballs disappear. If the show gets cancelled, it won't necessarily be because people are tired of it. It's more likely they just never got the chance to see it. Sunday nights in prime time on CBS used to be one of the highest rated nights of the week. Now it's where hit shows go to die.

Don't stop at a mere letter. Organize a mass hunger strike with the ultimate resolution being a drink of poison Kool-Aide. Along the way, pillage, vandalize and mame as many as possible.

The hallowed CBC or CHUM from 1954 would never do this.

Time for Kathleen Whine to legislate mandatory start times.  She can pay for it with a huge tax on the air we breathe.

This is Canada.
It would seem that there is no law (or agreement?) preventing the Canadian network from airing regular CBS content on time when this happens.
Global aired NCIS Los Angeles and Timeless on time.
What did Channel Eleven do? (channel 11 has the sim sub rights for 60 minutes in Ontario)

All the other series are aired on time in Canada, unless there's a specific reason (like Global or CTV showing a sports simulcast, for example) that might prevent it here. All the Canadian networks get a pre-feed of the shows, so they're in house when it comes time to show them and they can manipulate things like the credits for their own needs.

But I don't believe there is a pre-feed of "60 Minutes," which is sent out only at 7 PM (or whatever time it finally airs) by CBS. That means CHCH can't roll it early, especially since the station is easily received across the border. As a result they're often put in the rather strange position of having to start fill-in programming, which can be cut off at any second once the CBS feed begins.

It's a crazy situation but I remember when CH was producing a weekend newscast and their hosts would have to stay on the air - and sometimes stay on and on and on - all the while repeatedly announcing "60 Minutes has been delayed at the source. We will join it the minute it begins." All of which was code for "CBS has yet another sports overrun and we have no choice but to keep showing you the same stories over and over and over until whatever they're showing finally ends."

As far as I know, "60 Minutes," perhaps because of what time it's scheduled, is the only non-live American show that runs into this problem. Oddly, though, the U.S. radio feed of the audio always starts on time - even this past Sunday, when the TV network was showing that endless overtime NCAA game. But it was on WCBS-AM, WBBM-AM and more in its normal slot.

There was one other weird anomaly that happened yesterday. CKTB, which normally airs the 60 Minutes audio, didn't have it at 7 PM. When the CBS-TV version finally started at 7:35 PM, they joined the feed for the Stormy Daniels story, then cur back to the TED Hour show that had originally started airing, missing the rest of "60's" minutes altogether.

Apparently, viewers weren't as annoyed as I was at having to wait. The one good thing about a huge sporting event is it brings the potential for a massive lead in with it.

Shows what I know. But it still bugs me.

Re: Frustration Abounds As Sports Trumps Trump On CBS

At one time, CBS used to televise the March Madness tournament themselves. With the increase in telecast rights fees, they can't afford to do it on their own anymore. Now it is also devided up between TBS, TNT and TRU TV. I don't know how it is decided as to who gets what games. CBS got the two Sunday games scheduled for 2:20 and 5:05. Earlier time starts probably would have solved the problem, but possibly the NCAA has a say in start times. The late game was between Duke and Kansas, two basketball powerhouses which would deliver huge numbers. It is unfortunate for 60 Minute fans that the game went into overtime, Hence the 36 minute delay. had the game ended on time, 60 Minutes would probably started around 7:05. Next Sunday you should be safe. The two "Final Four" games will be played Saturday night and the Championship game Monday night. A word of caution, The Masters Golf Tournament [on CBS 2nd weekend in April] could cause problems if there is a playoff.

Heidi Mayberry?  I was so pissed that Duke didn't score with 20 seconds to go in that useless 'eFFin' college game and then OVERTIME hit and even though it was on CHCH I watched CBS and I still got screwed when their horrible ineptitude with spots and promos running over top of the actual show in Hamilton crapped on the 'event' television...I mean hello!!!  Mickey Mouse lives in Hamilton not at Disneyland or Disney World.  Mickey Mouse = CHCH TV.  [again.]

I could give a RATS ASS about U.S. college anything let alone basketball.  Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Re: Frustration Abounds As Sports Trumps Trump On CBS

Two observations.  would cbs provide an advance version of a contentious 60 minutes to a canadian channel, in order to let them scoop the broadcast story..... i doubt it.  I also agree that cbs should have anticipated some sort of delay in programming, however it seems that people were willing to wait to watch.  so..... tells me that an important topic like lewinsky, er, stormy still gets ratings.

Hiya OC.  I agree with you about basketball, but I love US college sports, having been born in a border city.  And I suspect networks secretly love it when games run overtime.  Not only are the sports junkies still tuned in, but so are viewers of the 7pm program who are anxiously waiting for their show to start.  But after the 1968 Heidi incident, there’s no way games will be abandoned before they end.
