A M*A*S*H Rehash

No, they're not remaking the show, unlike so many others, including Roseanne and Murphy Brown. And while I know this isn't the kind of post that normally makes it here, some may appreciate it.

If you were a fan of the TV show MASH - generally considered one of the best sitcoms of all time - this is a wonderful trip down memory lane, complete with all kinds of insider stuff we've never heard before.

It's long, but I wish it were longer!

That was a fun, excellent read of a super show & a stellar cast.  Thanks.

While never a top rated show, it did manage to spend nine of its eleven seasons in the Neilsen Top 10. MASH's best ratings were in its final season [#3 82-83]  The worst ratings were season one [#46 72-73] and season four [#15 75-76]

Re: A M*A*S*H Rehash

Sadly, if it were on today, it likely would have been cancelled with those first season numbers. If memory serves, it was only when it was moved to CBS's powerful Saturday night line-up in 1973 (which included All In The Family, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Bob Newhart Show and the Carol Burnett Show) that it really blossomed.

How ironic that none of the main U.S. networks program anything new on Saturdays anymore, because of the perception that few people are at home and those who are, aren't watching. The truth is that it became a self-fulfilling prophecy. They showed nothing so no one watched. When no one watched, they decided to show nothing.

While the Internet played its part, it started long before that. Hard to believe there's been such a huge shift in such a relatively short time and that all those now acknowledged classics aired on the same night.

You are correct RA. In it's original Sunday night slot, it was getting pummeled by The FBI on ABC and Disney on NBC. In the fall of 73, CBS moved the show to the Sat 830 slot after All In the Family and just before Mary Tyler Moore. MASH finished 4th that year. Family finished #1 for the 3rd consecutive season and Mary finished 9th.

Just two days after posting the original story, comes this sad news:

Worth resurrecting this old topic just for this.
