CBC Creates New "CBC Money" Division For Radio, TV & Online

It will be more than just a name. The new entity, called "CBC Money," will cover finances on all its platforms, hiring 16 new reporters for a unit based in Calgary, more reporters for other cities across the country, and at least two producers in Toronto.

The result will be several new shows about finances, with other current programs that centre on money (like the long running "Dragon's Den") being absorbed into the new unit.

"It will include a new video series from CBC Radio's "Cost of Living" hosted by business journalist Paul Haavardsrud, offering practical tips. CBC Money will also feature new personal finance entertainment shows."

The new group is set to launch next year.

(Oddly enough, despite its subject matter, there's no word no how much this will cost taxpayers.)

CBC to boost personal finance programming under new CBC Money umbrella

Re: CBC Creates New "CBC Money" Division For Radio, TV & Online

I’m a bit torn on this one. On the one hand, it’s great that 16 new reporters will be hired by the CBC for this venture, but they are probably the only broadcaster in Canada that can afford to do this, and that part bothers me, as they wouldn’t be doing it without our tax dollars. They should not be allowed to run commercials if they are also getting $1.1B/yr from taxpayers. That should be their first “money” report!

It's all borrowed and printed money anyway, so it's the children and the grandchildren and the grandchildren's children of the taxpayers that will be bearing the interest costs of this for their entire lives.

Sounds like a good topic for CBC's new Money division!

How is that odd? Everything costs money. With so much concern about the cost of living, it indicates the CBC is paying attention. Maybe they'll even save by having financial related shows under one umbrella.

True, but since it's our money they're spending to create this on several fronts, wouldn't you like to know how much all this is going to cost? A unit dedicated solely to money - and we don't know the cost. Sounds odd to me.

Would we be saying the same thing when Street Cents was around?

Re: CBC Creates New "CBC Money" Division For Radio, TV & Online

Regardless of whether it's the CBC or some other publicly funded entity, don't we have right to know what it will cost us? I don't think that's an unreasonable request. I'm pretty sure you would demand to know what you're spending your income on if someone was taking it out of your wallet, especially if you had no say in it.

I'm not necessarily against the CBC doing this. I just want to be informed what it's costing all of us. What's the budget? "The CBC is spending $XX million/billion to set this new unit up." That's all I'm asking for.

Why is finding that out an issue?

Street Cents aired from 1989 to 2006. Completely different circumstances than we have today, where advertising dollars are spent predominantly online, broadcasting was still a fairly lucrative business back then and companies could hold their own better than current times. Companies like Bell and Rogers were actually buying up broadcasters, don’t see that anymore. Sure the CBC still got our tax dollars, but other broadcasters were not hurting like they are now so it wasn’t such an issue. BTW, Street Cents was a decent show IMO.

Also worth noting that the usually excellent "Marketplace" will also fall under the new CBC Money umbrella.

I doubt if this is extra money, CBC Money will be coming out of the existing budget.  Also some of it will be supported by advertising.  Actually they may do well with financial institutions and investment advertising.  BNN Bloomberg during the day has lots of ads you don't see anywhere else.  So how much it is costing the taxpayer is a none issue.  And why would they announce the cost anyway.  They don't for other programming, and why should they?

If they launch a new website and fast or tv channel, that would be huge compitision for BNN.
Will Amanda lang be moving back to the cbc or staying with bell?

They're getting a new H.Q. in Calgary, hiring 16 reporters there and 5 more across the country and adding 2 producers in Toronto, not to mention the future program production charges. That's not pin money. If they have it in the existing budget to pay for all that, then we're giving them too much. And it's still our money regardless.

I'm honestly not sure why people are so against finding out what it's going to cost. It's called "CBC Money." They, of all people, should be willing to talk about the finances! Or is the CBC in some way exempt from what every other government-sponsored entity is required to provide?

It's a brand new news studio in Calgary, not a new headquarters for CBC in that city.  Maybe something will be announced in the budget today.  But I don't see why you seem to think that the cost would be part of the story from Canadian Press. Yes it is called CBC Money...so what?  You expect them then to talk about their finances?  Maybe  CBC should also put out a press release when they do work on the transmitter or buy some new cameras or audio equipment for Vancouver or Winnipeg to show how much this is costing taxpayers?

Yes, I would welcome transparency about how any level of government spends our hard-earned tax money. They owe us nothing less. (And we seem to owe them ever more.) The fact it happens to be the CBC in this case is almost irrelevant.

The transparency is likely in the CBC's financials, which I presume are public documents. You can't seriously expect costs like this to be documented and reported every time the CBC does something? My spidey sense screams that you have some kind of disagreement about the CBC being in part taxpayer funded.

Re: CBC Creates New "CBC Money" Division For Radio, TV & Online

And now we know where it's coming from. From the CBC's own story on the newly released federal budget:

"The budget pitches an additional $300 million over two years, starting this year, to CBC/Radio-Canada to "strengthen its capacity to meet the evolving needs of Canadians across the country."

Hmm..." to "strengthen its capacity to meet the evolving needs of Canadians across the country."

Not sure exactly what that means, but it certainly sounds good. Until you actually realize it's virtually meaningless. And yes, I admit to not being a fan of the Corp. Everyone is entitled to their opinion on this issue. That happens to be mine. You are more than welcome to differ, as I know many here do.

A bit more information about CBC Money...

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/cbc-money-to-launch-next-year-with-slate-of-original-content-dedicated-to-personal-finance-9.7409580

CBC will be setting up a new office for CBC Money in Downtown Calgary. They are also keeping CBC Calgary's current broadcasting facilities.

I've been to CBC Calgary's current home a few times for their open house. It's in an office building outside of downtown shared with a medical lab. All English and French radio/TV/digital staff work out of there. It's a nice facility but it seemed like they didn't have much spare space left. I'm not surprised CBC has decided to find a new space for CBC Money elsewhere.

Here's what I think it means.
To strangthin the evalving neads of afluent hipsters and downtowners and to leav the suburbs and smaller communities behind when it comes to programming on our radio networks.
CBC music is mainly for latte-drinking hipsters who live in afluent boring areas of toronto with no soul.
CBC music neads a new format for the rest of us.
Maybe a format with mainstream ac and canadian pop and classic hits at its core, with country, classic hits, and singer-songwriters. daytime should stay the same with an expanding slot of specialty programming in evenings and weekends focusing on there existing genres but also adding an all country music program, a traditional east-coast music program, a program focusing on ethnic folkpop and pop music instead of world music which most immigrants don't even listen to, a program playing ccm music and wirship and country gospel on sondays, and a chr-type program focusing on young canadian artists.

Well, I would disagree with those sentiments. There's no question the CBC may appeal to a certain kind of audience, but much of their programming is more mainstream. Some of it is not to my taste, and as indicated, I'm not fond of the concept of a government taxpayer supported network.

But I do listen to a few of their shows. And believe me, I'm as far from a downtown hipster as you can get! And I don't drink.

I'm not talking about the tv side which is more mainstream, I'm talking about cbc music and radio 1.
Radio 1 has gotten more hipster left politicaly in there programming, and cbc music catters to the same audience as indie and even ciut, even thogh indie is expanding there playlist to atract the mainstream.

What do you mean "until you actually realize it is virtually meaningless".  Read the article.  I agree with pretty much everything they are proposing for culture.  I think CBC Money's first right move is the fact it is based in Calgary and not Toronto.  Too much media influence for English Canada both public and private comes out of Toronto.  The country doesn't end at Mississauga, or just north of Steeles.

Sorry but to "strengthen its capacity to meet the evolving needs of Canadians across the country." doesn't mean anything. What evolving needs? How does the CBC meet those if they can't even name them? It's just an excuse to dole out money to the Corp., while sticking the middle finger to the Opposition who wanted to cut its budget.

Hey, all's fair in politics and war. But does the CBC really deserve an extra $300 million? For what? Especially at a time when economic times are already tough for most families, and the deficit has just ballooned again so much, your grandkids' grandkids' grandkids' grandkids will still be paying for it. No one seems to care much about them. But I get the feeling they won't have many nice things to say about us when the time comes.

On this, at least, we agree. Not everything needs to be Toronto-based and if they're going to spend that money, legit or not, there's absolutely no reason it has to be spent in Ontario.

Well, I'm glad there putting effort into alberta, while your at it, what about an offis in the east-coast, in halifax?
But, is the east-coast as much of a finantial centre as much as the west-coast and ontario are?
The east-coast I guess is being reprisented in eurovision while alberta gets cbc money.

Re: CBC Creates New "CBC Money" Division For Radio, TV & Online

Goodness....where to start.  Well I agree the deficit has ballooned as it has in every country in the G-7, G-20.  This is not a Canadian thing.  Yes future generations will be paying for debt, just as we paid for it during our time when we were younger and in the working world.  Canada had huge deficits after two world wars and debt to GDP was through the roof right after WW2.  We were the generation that helped to pay it off along with a booming economy.

Don't understand why you think "evolving needs of Canadians across the country" doesn't mean anything.  Look around, Canada has changed both from the inside and outside.  Hopefully CBC Money, if done right will be a great tool for people who want to take the time, to learn about personal finance, better  understand economics, and business.  There is a lack of knowledge about financial responsibility, retirement planning, investing, taxation etc.by many younger Canadians and this could help people.  Sort of what a public broadcaster should do.

Yes I agree, including Canadian history, civics, math, english, etc.  But sadly many kids just don't know, along with too many younger parents.

Not watching CBC?  Probably, but it will be there for anyone who is interested and wants to understand and learn.  The individual needs to make the first move.

It doesn't matter. No amount of money will ever be enough. And I know this is federal and not provincial, but that $300 million given to the CBC would certainly be a boon to our school systems. Or health care. Or housing. Or...
