First Buffalo Station Goes All Christmas

There's no snow, snow, snow but there's plenty of ho-ho-ho on WTSS, 96.1 in Buffalo. The station, which normally plays music from "The 90s to Now" and is hard to get here in the GTA, is the first in the city across the border to flip to an all Xmas format. It started Sunday morning at 7 AM.

And what about listeners who think it's too much too soon? The station has a suggestion for any Grinches on its web site:

"Those that think playing Christmas music on November 1st is too early, feel free to listen to our sister stations WYRK 106.5, WBLK 93.7 or WBUF 92.9 for amazing music and pop over to us when you get into the Christmas music mood."

Re: First Buffalo Station Goes All Christmas

It won't be the the same as the original WTSS.
I cant even get 96.1 here in Scarborough.
I will stream it and hear if its like the old WTSS.

Re: First Buffalo Station Goes All Christmas

The original WTSS (aka WBEN-FM) at 102.5 was a rare 110,000 watt station, far in excess of the normal 50K signal allowed by the FCC. It was grandfathered in and allowed to keep the monster wattage when the rules changed because it had been on the air since 1946. That's why the old Rock 102 came in so well in Toronto and became a sensation here in the 70s.

Now of course, it's another K-Love station with wall to wall religion.

The new WTSS at 96.1 isn't even close to the old signal, turning out a measly (in comparison) 47,000 watts of power. And with classical 96.3 in Toronto and Ajax's CJKX at 95.9, it's small wonder you can't hear it here. So yes, online is your only real choice.

And by the way, this early adoption of all Yule all the time is nothing new. The 96.1 version of WTSS has been going all Christmas on November 1st for years, one of the first stations in the U.S. to make the change every year.

I still think it's too early, but hey, I think Dec. 23rd would be too early!

This has been mentioned previously but to reiterate  the 50,000 watt maximum applies only to AM stations in Canada and the U.S. There are a fair number of FM stations that exceed 50,000 watts.

Thank you for that clarification. I had not heard that before.

Re: First Buffalo Station Goes All Christmas

I didn't even realize that 96.1 adopted the old WTSS callsign from 102.5. I think I picked up that station here, once or twice, back in the early 1990s.

Anyway, doesn't look like I'll be listening to them online anytime soon, given the all Christmas thing. Way too early!

I actually  miss Joy 96, WJYE.  Lighter hits, softer hits...not instrumentals, but still a nice quieter format than most.

Speaking of grandfathered super powered FM stations. Grand Rapids, Mi. has three of them. Country 93.7 WBCT has a whopping 320,000 watts on a 781' tower. A/C 105.7 WSRW has 265,000 watts from a 581' tower while U of Michigan affilliate 104.1 WVGR clocks in with 96,000 watts from a 725' tower.

Yeah, that was to match the Star 96.1 branding that they very briefly picked up, until Audacy gave them a C&D

Actually WOMC is 190,000 watts. Must have been a typo. Does WOMC make it into London with a listenable signal or tropo only?

Yes it does. Under clear conditions but only during the night. Most of the time I get some of the Erie PA stations like WRTS 103.7, WXTA 97.9 WQLN 91.3 and sometimes WTWF 93.9. Some stations from Detroit MI, Cleveland OH and Erie PA can be heard in some parts of London.

I can even sometimes pick up WRTS and WQLN here in scarborough during the summer.
Along with WPIG, a few jamestown NY stations, some rochester stations, and some stations from central New York.

I remember being in Cleveland a few years ago and I picked up CFPL FM 95.9 and CFHK 103.1 while near the waterfront in Downtown Cleveland. Yes CFPL-FM 95.9 is the powerhouse of Southwestern Ontario and can be heard in northen parts of Cleveland Ohio, Erie PA and parts of New York state south of Buffalo.

When I was east of Toronto such as Darlington I would pick up a few Rochester stations such as WPXY 97.9, WDVI 100.5 and WKGS 106.7 near the lake would come in but I don't think it's possible anymore since many of the FM's in Toronto have gone HD.
