The Strange Story Of CKBB, CKCB - And The Other CKCB In Toronto

Remember many years ago when CKBB Barrie opened a sister station to rebroadcast the station in Collingwood? Its call letters were CKCB, and they used to use both when they I.D.'d themselves. It was a bit awkward, but it worked.

But did you know there was another CKCB Radio - and this one was in Toronto? I have to admit I'd never heard of this until I came across this obscure article from Nov. 1965, when the new satellite station became involved in a very weird battle for the name with a closed circuit operation with the same four call letters right here in T.O.

Obviously, this was eventually resolved - CKBB (950 AM) & CKCB (1400 AM) were on the air from cottage county for years. But this forgotten part of the story reveals they didn't get there without a fight. Has anyone ever heard of this?

Re: The Strange Story Of CKBB, CKCB - And The Other CKCB In Toronto

I read the history of canadian broadcasting site, and I've never heard of CKCB Toronto, only the one in barry now known as big 101 or 101.1 big fm.
Does any one even know what type of programming Toronto's CKCB even aired?

Re: The Strange Story Of CKBB, CKCB - And The Other CKCB In Toronto

The article says it was an ultra-local Top 40 station in the mid-60s that probably didn't go beyond the neighbourhood it was in. But he got the name "CKCB Enterprises" first and decided to try and make a few bucks off it. The story doesn't say how it ended, but CKCB did end up as the call letters of the Collingwood station, so something was resolved.

Was it an AM, FM, or Cable FM?
Was it CRTC licenced or a pirate?
There should be a wikipedia artical about this strange station or if the history of canadian broadcasting website was still updated, maybe an entry in that website.
So many stations in Barry have b somewhere in there callsines, so I get confused.
And these 2 stations are now owned by Corus, so it makes it even more confusing.
What sets them apart now is branding and format.
1'S a hot ac leaning AC station in a near-by market to barry, and the other's a classic hits station in barry.
1'S the peek and 1's big.

Do you have an actual link to this artical or just an immage?
Jaws cant read immages or text on this forum at all if not in full-length.
I want to know more about this CKCB in Toronto, the other one's well-known.

Re: The Strange Story Of CKBB, CKCB - And The Other CKCB In Toronto

Unfortunately I don't have a link. I found this in my collection from a long time ago and I'm even sure of the origin of it. I have never heard of it either, but it sounds like the Toronto one was a small independent outfit that the guy started literally in his basement to put on dances, "play at radio" and the like and, as a guess, was probably on carrier current, which is why it didn't reach anywhere.

The article describes it as an "almost radio station."

I doubt it was even a licenced station, so how he could argue with the then-owners of CKCB is beyond me. If the goverment assigned CKCB to Collingwood, I don't see how this guy had a leg to stand on.

We know what happened to CKCB . I wonder whatever happened to Paul Lougheed.

That's sad.
I'm going to do my own digging, hopefully, something non-ai written comes up about this strange station.
I even hope someone has an aircheck somewhere, but dought it.

Re: The Strange Story Of CKBB, CKCB - And The Other CKCB In Toronto

When I was a kid, we sometimes visited our uncle who lived in Collingwood and sometime stayed for a few days. He didn't own a TV and always had CKBB on his radio. When CKCB came along I didn't know why. He always got a good signal from CKBB day and night.

We lived near Owen Sound. We used to get a faint signal from CKBB during the day, but never from CKCB.

After all is said and done, more is usually said than done.

Re: The Strange Story Of CKBB, CKCB - And The Other CKCB In Toronto

AM 1400 was a local only frequency and put out a terrible signal. Until they got a power boost to 1,000 watts, they were restricted to a lowly 250.

At least CKBB at 950 could be heard in Toronto. I'm not sure if CKCB ever came in here at all.

Note sure beyond this timeframe, but a January 1969 "Billboard" issue ( https://www.worldradiohistory.com/Archive-All-Music/Billboard/60s/1969/BB-1969-01-11.pdf ) reads on page 50:

Paul Lougheed has joined CKFH, Toronto on a part time basis, using the air name of Paul Douglas. Earl Mann is another new CKFH staffer.

Wow, that is some research. Amazing you found that in an old Billboard. Still does not explain how they resolved the CKCB issue, but very impressive to find that brief mention from so long ago. Well done!

Would Copyright or TradeMark rules supercede call letter rights? Might not apply here given so many variables, but perhaps it's worth considering?
