Wow, why all the haters on here?? I actually love Canada and I am getting clobbered on this forum. I have turned BIG WECK from a nothing to a top 10 in Buffalo. I employ real people. I love radio. You folks need to get your facts straight. - The Patriot had zero advertiser and listener suppport. My bad. That's done. Let's move on to US COUNTRY - a total hit. In case you did not know, I have spent most of my radio career at WYRK and WLKK (Formerly WNUC)- Hot Retro Country is a no-brainer. Have you seen the staff I have hired, including our advisor, the person who invented WYRK and saw it to #1 for almost 20 years? Folks, there is somehting wrong with country radio when you are not playing Garth, Reba, George, Alan, Shania, Kenny, etc. You cannot here that anywhere but US COUNTRY. Also, regarding the WXRL thing, you realize they have like a .05 share right, and they play more polka than country? We can leave them out of this conversation. US COUNTRY will not compete against WYRK - US COUNTRY will compliment them and extend the playlist of country in Buffalo, which includes that biggest era of country music, the 80's and 90's. Sit back, have another Molson, and let me run the station, then watch the ratings go up. Wow, so many haters. If you should hate anything it should be some other person in the US, not me. -Buddy
PS. We are perfectly happy being Buffalo's #2 country station. Especially when the #1 country station is the highest revenue getter and highest ratings getter in the market. I'm totally fine being #2
I did'nt like the pro-america format of the patriet.
And I'm starting to hear what makes the new US country different from WXRL.
I love the new format, kind of reminds me of CHAM from 2010 to 2012 and ckpc before it became christian and then shut down.
But, at first, when the format was anounced, I had some douts.
I said on this forum, what's going to set it apart from WXRL?
Buddy should of made it a localy-focused WGN-like talk station, a 24/7 polka station, or a full-service more station.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I meant what is the URL?
Never mind, I tracked it down.
U.S.country.com

Good luck with your new format. However, Country has never been my choice of music and likely never will be.

Country formats have a long history of failure in Toronto and I've never really been able to figure out why. CFGM was the only station that came close to being around a long time, while CKEY, CISS-FM and a few others that tried country did not stay with it.
The music is still around, but now largely seems confined to peripheral GTA stations, like 88.5 in Newmarket.
I've never understood why it doesn't seem to work well in the city, but until someone hits on the right formula, it's hard to find on the local Toronto radio dial.

Here's the Buffalo News' take on the switch.
'The Patriot' switching format from conservative talk to country music

It's not just here. Country does not do well in NYC and LA either. WKMK ranks 22nd in NY with a 1.0 share while KKGO also sits in 22nd place with a 2.0 share.

I've long maintained classic country could be a viable format in markets where there is so much duplication of classic rock / hits, modern hot country and CHR formats. Places like Kitchener and London.
Kudos to Mr. Shula for implementing something different. I wish him much success. It's too bad I am out of the station's range. So far the stream is available in Canada.

Then how does CFXJ still have its country format?

There's people in cities who like classic country.
I like it, but I don't like the new rap country or country pop.
Give me some jim reevs, george strate, dolly parton, or reeba any day.

It went country in Sept. 2024. Two years is not a long time and its ratings are so low, it's not even really reflected in the David Bray list of Numeris numbers that comes out a few times a year. I guess it has a following. But it seems to be a small one.

The idea for CFXJ, is that it's better to have low ratings as a station that is not a direct threat to Boom.
Although I do agree with some on this very board that a younger boom might work,
I guess Stingray saw that they wanted an extreme difference between stations,
not something that might cause listeners to swing back and forth between the two.
That being said, in all seriousness, how is Country doing vs former formats like Move FM or Flow?
They went through all the trouble of moving Flow to 98.7 so I guess Stingray felt not trying to move it back is smarter,
and therefore, Country is the best way to go...
(& also doing better than Today radio did)
