Who Gets Your Vote For Election Coverage Monday Night?

Of all the regular Toronto TV stations on Monday night, only one - the CBC - will have an election night special. Their "GTA Votes: Election Night 2026" airs from 7-10PM, followed by the National. Barring any glitches or a race that's literally down to a few hundred votes, we should know the winner in Toronto and Mississauga by then.

Only CHCH in Hamilton will provide coverage for their area, with "Your Home, Your Vote" on from 9-11PM that night.

The rest - CFTO, Global and City TV - have elected - you should pardon the expression - to stay with U.S. show simulcasts for the night, waiting for the 11 PM news to do any real reporting. (Although they may do quick cut-ins once the winner is named.) Most will have coverage on either their cable outlets (CP24) or their online streaming channels, like CityNews 24/7 or Global News Toronto 24/7.

On the radio, in addition to CBC Radio 1, Newstalk 1010 promises an extensive election night results show, while Ben Mulroney and Greg Brady will do the honours from 6:30-10 PM on AM640.

There will also be a plethora of newspaper sites giving riding-by-riding tallies, updated by hitting the refresh key.

Hopefully, they all give results from other GTA cities, like Vaughan, Newmarket, Oshawa etc. etc., because there's more than just the Toronto horse race on the line - although granted, it's the most interesting.

So which one gets your vote Monday night? I'm probably going to rely on the radio, because evenings tend to be busy for me and I don't really have the time to sit and watch anything. And audio-only means I don't have to be distracted by a screen.

Have you made a pick for watching this coverage? Will you just graze around until you find something that catches your attention? Or is this a case of just tell me the winner at 11 PM and be done with it?

Either way, Monday is going to be a busy night in newsrooms across this city.

For me, cp24, the toronto sun, newstalk 1010, and 680 news.
I will morelikely be listening on the radio.
1010's post-debate show was a nice break from the nightshift, with live callers and interactions.
Hopefully, 1010 does it again monday night.

Re: Who Gets Your Vote For Election Coverage Monday Night?

Out here in the Ottawa Valley, I'll likely rotate through MBC's three radio stations (myFM Renfrew, myFM Pembroke and WOW FM Arnprior) and Cogeco's "YourTV" out of Pembroke for local coverage, and for City of Ottawa coverage, CBC and CTV. Former CFRA host Mark Sutcliffe is the incumbent in Ottawa, seeking a second term as the capital's mayor.

The YourTV channels across the province (places like Windsor, Burlington, Peterborough/Lindsay, Kingston, and of course the Ottawa Valley) have been producing a lot of content for this year's municipal election campaigns... things like candidate profiles and debates, plus the returns they'll be broadcasting live on Monday night.

CP 24, and maybe channel 100 (Rogers Citynews 24/7 channel)
I don't doubt that I'll probably hop around, also checking out CBC and a few other sources.

Since the polls don't close until 8pm, why would the CBC need to start their election coverage at 7pm. An hour of useless chat plus Corrie Street gets kicked back to the afternoon.

Oh to have the Citytv of old! Their elections coverage was always entertaining and they did it up right, as discussed here on the SOWNY board a few posts ago!

Until that one night they completely blew the results right out of the water.  I don't remember why; something to do with the pool data feed and the wrong schema, but it was a long time ago.

Madness takes its toll.  Please have exact change.

Re: Who Gets Your Vote For Election Coverage Monday Night?

I just heard that Zoomer Radio is also doing election night coverage, with Libby Znaimer hosting a "panel of experts." I think it might be an audio simulcast from Vision TV. But at least a non-talk station (well most of the time) is doing something to cover this.

What's really different is that it will also be airing on Classical 96.3, which I wasn't expecting.

You’re right ig, I remember that. It didn’t look good on CityPulse but at least they still threw a decent watch party!

If you think that's bad, AM640's election show starts at 6:30 PM - more than an hour and a half before the polls close. So no results and no real discussion of issues.

I'll be curious to see how they fill the first 90 minutes+ before the results start trickling in. What will Greg Brady and Ben Mulroney talk about to fill all that time? I guess we'll find out.

But in the end, the only thing that matters is who wins. And once that's out and we get a few words from the victor and the vanquished, will anyone stay for the rest?

Re: Who Gets Your Vote For Election Coverage Monday Night?

Does anyone remember the year when tv and radio stations started there programs before the polls closed. When it when a kid. The Election programs never started until the polls closed.
I really don't see the point in starting the show early.

Re: Who Gets Your Vote For Election Coverage Monday Night?

I remember the old City TV election coverage, which would come on at 7 PM before the polls closed. The entire hour consisted of what the news director called a "reel," going from one campaign H.Q. to the next, filling in time.

My dim memory seems to recall seeing Peter Silverman standing in one candidate's rented party room tasting the food, and commenting on whether it was good or not.

Hey, anything to fill time! And at least he got fed. You know the stories of news people and free food. I'm surprised there was anything left by the time the polls closed.

Re: Who Gets Your Vote For Election Coverage Monday Night?

It's all about getting lead in listening/viewing.   Some die hard types will tune in early and stay with them during the coverage.    680 really doesn't need to do this as they will be able to cover things leading up to the 8pm closing of the polls.    I think it's why you are seeing them not start full coverage until 8pm officially.      To be honest I don't need to hear the endless conversations from talking heads of their opinions.    I will be with 680 for this fact.   It also could be over within 30 mins due to eletronic counting.

Yep. The municipal vote was always my favourite one to work because it was over very early. The province was second. And I hated the federal elections because they could stretch on until 3 AM if there was no decision in the east and the West Coast had the final say. Those were brutal.
