For Political Junkies Only (Part 3)

BC's premier David Eby may have pulled off a big blunder similar to former Ontario premier David Peterson.  Eby called an election long before his majority mandate needed to end, and could very well lose his job Saturday evening. The same thing did work for Doug Ford early last year, but it doesn't look good for the west coast NDP leader.

The BC Conservative party has a brand new leader that many don't know very well.  He has only been in the job for a few weeks.  But right now polls are saying that the Conservatives are leading Eby's NDP by 3 points.  The Tory's other new leader, Kerry-Lynne Findlay stepped down after a party revolt a couple of weeks ago.  She had only been at the head of the BC Conservatives since the party convention back in May.

The rest of the country can watch the BC election drama unfold late Saturday evening/Sunday morning with CBC News Network coverage beginning at 10:30pm and CTV News Channel at 11pm.

I find it interesting that the Liberal Party, as we know it, has not existed in British Columbia since 1987.

Polls close tonight at 8pm Pacific time, which is 11pm in Ontario, so I don’t think I’ll be staying up to watch results tonight, but this could blow up in Eby’s face, what was he thinking? Maybe I should tune in….!

Good point mace, and when the BC Liberals were around in recent years they were Liberal in name only.  BC Libs were much more like a Conservative party and this squeezed out the BC Conservative's in elections for decades. Recent Liberal premiers like Christy Clark and Gordon Campbell were de facto Conservatives.

BC provincial politics has never followed the norm.  The first 13 premiers had no party affiliation!  So from 1871 to 1903 the province was governed by independents. And the most successful party in BC's history has been the Social Credit party, which no longer exists.

So another interesting chapter in BC politics could be written tonight.  BC does have clout across the country since like Alberta they are a "have" province.  For those that like provincial politics, this could be an interesting Saturday night/Sunday morning.  I certainly will be tuning in.
