This is my second installment of this complaint, but honestly, today was just too much. A few years ago, I posted on this forum about the sheer volume of spots on most of the stations I listen to. And now, after turning off my radio in disgust Wednesday afternoon, I feel like it's time to go over this again.
Look, I support local radio. I want it to make money so it can continue. But honest to God, you cannot put on 6 minutes of commercials every single break and expect anyone who's not comatose to stay tuned through all that clutter. It seems like every time I turn on a station, they're knee deep in ad overload. One commercial after another after another after another,
Who in their right mind has the patience to absorb so much ear-itation? And the fact that 85% of them - and I feel I'm underestimating that number - are so badly written only makes it worse. If you want to keep TSL up, keep the 5-6 minutes of advertising down. No one has the patience to sit through it, even me. And I'll listen to almost anything for two-three minutes if the show is enjoyable. But not if you make it unbearable.
How many sales pitches can you take before you go elsewhere? My problem is all the stations I listen to regularly operate on the same clock, so everywhere you go, you hit the same bloated cluster. You can't even escape it anymore by changing the channel.
I'm not sure what the answer is. Maybe have fewer of them and more breaks in your average hour. You know it's out of control when even someone like me, who will put up with a lot on radio, can't take it anymore.
Because as it stands now, GTA radio could use a good cleaning with some "spot" remover.

I agree with you, but in the case of 640/1010 (which I assume you're talking about) they're not even really trying for TSL anymore.

Yes, I believe it now stands for Time Spent Leaving.

It might help if the ads were humourous instead of totally annoying. Perhaps if those writing radio ads today had attended Dick Orkin's radio ads class, the ad spots would be much more tolerable now.

Orkin was the guy who created Chickenman, which was a silly radio feature that was a sensation in its day. It aired here on CKFH.

Behaviour modification is a good approach to this problem. Apply a 100% tax on all ad buys. This should encourage moderation without infringing on everyone's freedoms.

I know it’s not the most popular station here but I find AM740 has short commercial breaks, 2 minutes on average. Now they probably don’t sell a lot of ad time as they air a lot of promos for their shows/services, but they keep the breaks short, now if they could change up their playlist, too many ballads of late!
