Exactly

Those that are currently keeping the lights on are also responsible for burying itself under roughly $1 billion of debt.
They watched television and radio audiences and revenue deteriorate to digital and streaming. Too late to make any real adjustments. Pluto got rid of them and went elsewhere to sell. Stack doesn’t have enough scale.
They spent staggering amounts servicing debt rather than investing in growth. Eliminated hundreds of employees.
The needed a recapitalization merely to keep going, not some brilliant strategic move.
I do like Global News though.

Servicing the debt was optional?
They did exactly what they should have: focused on core assets (which appear to be Global News, Stack, and a few radio stations) that are positive contributors, while stripping everything else down to just "operational" to prepare them for sale to existing broadcasters who can efficiently integrate them into existing clusters and re-build them to some degree.

I wonder if we will see the AM's like CJOY and CFPL and even 640 impacted?

Calling it “exactly what they should have done” gives management a lot of credit for managing a crisis it helped create. It’s unfortunate all around. So many things going against them and all traditional broadcasters without sports properties.

Oddly enough I had CJOY on in the car at around 10:40 this morning, and it sounded like they had a live announcer on the mid morning shift. Also caught 107.5 Dave Rocks on the weekend, and if the host wasn't live, he was a master at voice tracking. Lots of breaks and promo about Dave.

Ah Corus was foolin', At that time, it's Middays with Dan Allaire10:00 AM - 2:00 PM
who voicetracks for Kingston and Cornwall. It appears he is based in Cornwall. Odd they would keep him in the midday timeslot, but have no hosts (live or tracked) on morning or drive. As someone once said on this forum regarding CJOY somebody forgot to turn it off.

I don't know about the cost of running CJOY, but it is running ads in a manner that suggests that the station is making money.

There's no way of knowing that based on hearing the commercials. We don't know the rates. We also don't know how many are simply bonuses for buying Magic. (probably lots)
Whether is makes or loses money, it's probably by a tiny margin.
If it's a loss, they'll have determined that it at least has some sale value to someone sometime soon.
Bell won that gamble in Hamilton, Windsor, and probably St Catherines. So you never know.

Do they still have the building in Guelph ?

Yes, and the Kitchener stations have moved in.

Debt holders taking over or it could be a coincidence in timing, but a number of employees on the sales side of Corus were let go this week.
Heartbreaking.

More people let go on the finance side.
Ominous post I realize but seems Corus is taking the small cuts frequently approach.

Is there no requirement for a station to have a studio in its community of license? If not there should be.

Probably not. The US also got rid of that rule in the last few years.

Yeah, not in a specific, enforced way. There are numerous commercial stations that don't have any studios; Y108 being the biggest one I can think of. Both the Rogers and Corus clusters in Kingston, too.

Given that most stations aren't much more than a computer running in a closet the location of the closet is not important. Top of the hour ID: broadcasting from Guelph Ontario this is XXXX - FM Kitchener. Has a nice ring to it.

Evanov radio group DID get in trouble for Z103, but only because they were failing to mention Orangeville.
Now they do, but they still broadcast from just outside Kipling subway station in Toronto.
CRTC doesn't seem to care where they broadcast from, just as long as they credit the station for being an Orangeville radio station.
Same for their Newmarket radio station, 88five FM...broadcasting from Toronto, but required to mention Newmarket... (although they might be trying to pass themselves off as a GTA station...)

It's not a big deal, but Sauga 960, the station that serves Mississauga and Brampton, is located on Westmore Dr. in Etobicoke, not in the "Sauga" of their branding. The station's phone number starts with a 416 area code - not the 905 they'd have if they really were in the city they're licensed to serve.
