Netflix To Premiere SCTV Documentary On Oct. 30th

The pay streamer will debut the special called "SCTV: The Greatest Show You Never Heard Of" at the end of the month.

It's kind of an odd title. Not only did SCTV have a long run in Canada, it also aired for a while after Saturday Night Live on NBC. But it does show the influence the Canuck-born program had on audiences.

The special features memories from Martin Short and Rick Moranis and talks about its influence with future stars like Conan O'Brien.

You can watch the memory flogging trailer here.

I may need to subscribe to Netflix briefly to watch this.   Annoying choice of music for the promo.

I take it this isn't the long awaited Scorcese doc?

One line of thinking is that the Scorsese doc was abandoned (due to him being busy) and rights for the 2018 live event footage were then transferred to this new doc.

At https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/An_Afternoon_with_SCTV , this text appears at the bottom:

"In August 2026, Netflix announced a documentary titled SCTV: The Greatest Show You've Never Heard Of, directed by Jason Hehir with Kimmel as an executive producer, to be released on October 30. Netflix promotional material describes the documentary as including "an emotional reunion in Toronto", which Exclaim! reported was "presumably" referring to the 2018 taping."

I had no idea that late night host Jimmy Kimmel was not only an SCTV fanatic, but is the executive producer of the new Netflix special on the show.

Jimmy Kimmel is an ‘SCTV’ super fan. Here’s how he describes its brilliance

Re: Netflix To Premiere SCTV Documentary On Oct. 30th

The U.K. newspaper The Guardian has a great interview with Dave Thomas about SCTV. While he doesn't appreciate the title of the new Netflix specal ("SCTV: The Greatest Show You Never Heard Of"), he appreciates the recognition of the cast and the writing.

But he says what the producers of the documentary left out is among the things that really bother him.

"Many things are skipped over, such as the musical acts, including bands like the Boomtown Rats and the Plasmatics, who didn’t just perform but also appeared in sketches. And while the cast took care of the writing in the show’s early days, they were later joined by talented staff. These omissions rankle with Thomas."

I have to admit I forgot about musical guests being part of the show because the comedy was so memorable.

And Thomas recalls in those early days, despite being on NBC, not everyone knew who they were.

"We went to New York for a press conference,” Thomas says. “There were only three people there and two of them were student journalists. But we thought, well, screw this press conference, let’s go to Studio 54. We’re on television. We should be able to get in. They wouldn’t let us in.”

Finally, I love the article's sideways reference to the Canadian TV staple "Hinterland's Who's Who." Would anyone in the U.K. even know what that was?

Re: Netflix To Premiere SCTV Documentary On Oct. 30th

I love it!   It's so well done.    It had something I didn't expect!   It was decided that the footage for a doc taken in Toronto directed by Martin Scorsese in 2018 was 'dated'. So, new Director Jason Hehir reunited the cast, including Catherine O'Hara, in July 2025 for a redo. Catherine died 6 months later.   I think I'm going to watch it again!
