Variety takes a look at Sunday's Season 59 of the troubled 60 Minutes on CBS. There are subtle changes but it doesn't appear that the first episode of the new year was all that different - except for the departure of some of its major reporters and the controversy that surrounded their leaving. And the newcomers were barely seen at all.
"Some of the window dressing has indeed changed. The opening logo is rendered more in black and white and has less red. The opening montage, which once looked as if spread out across the cover of a magazine, now looks as it takes place on a mobile tablet.
One piece of the show did not change, at least in the first season broadcast. “The Last Minute,” a brief segment at program’s end that offers a few words about the program or its stories and was originally put into place by former executive producer Bill Owens., remains — perhaps because it has a regular sponsor."
There was also an on-screen QR code, designed to help viewers "interact" with the correspondents.
Expect more changes to be revealed in the coming weeks, but for now, week one of the new regime wasn't all that different than the hundreds of shows that went before it.

In an irony of timing, The NFL on CBS was partly sponsored by the creators of ChatGPT, an A.I. firm. As soon as the game finally ended, 60 Minutes debuted. And one of the final segments was a warning about the dangers of A.I.
A mixed message, for sure!

Why doesn't CBS schedule 60 Minutes on a weeknight? Sunday is always going to be a mess because of football and golf and despite this the show still gets solid ratings. CBS has some gaps in their prime time schedule through the week so why not schedule the show then? I always wondered why they cling on to the Sunday schedule after sports which is inconvenient for many viewers that aren't really into football and or golf.

Good question. My guess is it's been there so long, it's become a habit. Moving it will only force people to try and find it. And the fear is they may not bother.
Ed Sullivan, for instance, was always on 8 PM every Sunday night for decades. This was before football was such a presence on network TV. But everyone knew that time. Old habits are hard to break. And the networks don't want anyone to do that. So Sundays at 7 it is.
(Or almost always later, because of football. But hey, who won't tune in to a show that starts at 7:48PM one week and 8:13 PM the next? Has ANY football game ever, ever, ever ended on time? I think we know the answer.)

I always thought 7pm was kind of early for a show like 60 Minutes. Should be on at 9 or 10pm IMO and on a week night. Networks move shows all the time. Promote the time and day change, long time viewers will follow. A program like 60 Minutes starting "whenever" after sports to me indicates a lack of respect for the program and viewers. CBS could do a newscast/update after football. With news they could vary the length and get the evening programming back on schedule whenever football ends. The way it is now, the whole prime time schedule is screwed up.

Well you won't get an argument from me on that! (Odd as it is!) I just think 60 Minutes has been there so long, it's become like a fixture in that time slot and it's become something of a TV tradition after more than half a century. Some things you don't fool around with.
Also, Sunday nights at 7 PM are a kind of throwback to another era. That's when primetime used to start a long time ago. And while every other night of the week, it's at 8 PM, the "Sundays at 7" thing seems to have somehow been grandfathered in because it's the weekend.
Could they not just start the NFL games an hour earlier? End of problem most weeks. It would still attact a huge audience at noon, with the second game starting at 3:30 instead of 4:30. That would make a huge difference, with the added bonus that there would still be big numbers watching but primetime would mostly be safe on Sundays.
Or maybe they should just change the name of the 2 minute warning to the 20 minute warning. Never has 120 seconds taken so long to time out.

That would literally destroy the shows you mention. It takes weeks, if not months sometimes, to get these stories together. Doing it five days a week would be impossible, while keeping the quality intact.
As an example, a simple 6 PM Toronto news story on your favourite station takes a reporter an entire day to put together, involving hours of his/her time, plus a camera person. And that's just for a 60-90 sec. report that has to be ready for air at supper time. The 60 Minutes crew not only flies all over North America and the world to shoot their stories, but then producers and editors get their hands on it, to try and make it into the best 15 minute to half hour story it can be.
Doing that on a Monday-Friday basis while keeping the quality intact would be impossible, no matter how many people they had working on it. You just can't turn around a story that long that fast.
I remember when our reporters were assigned "news serials" to run during ratings. They worked on a heavily promoted five parter for weeks, and even then, each segment only ran maybe four-five minutes. 60 Minutes, W5 and the others could never do it on a daily basis. There simply isn't enough time in the day.

60 Minutes premiered on a Tuesday in 1968 and originally ran bi-weekly. The move to its current 7pm Sunday timeslot occured December 7, 1975.

Hawaii is the perfect place for you RA. The NFL early games kickoff at 8am the late games at 11:25am. Even NBC Sunday Night Football begins at 3:15pm. 60 Minutes never gets delayed there.

The article pointed out that the Raider/ Chief game was the top CBS late game. It was beamed to a large part of the country. However, Detroit, Chicago, Dallas, most of the northern midwest states and the entire west coast including LA, SF and Seattle were fed other games.
