Wheel Of Fortune Announcer Suspended By Sony, But Won't Say Why

His name is Jim Thornton and he's been the announcer on Wheel of Fortune since 2011. But he's not doing that right now, after Sony Pictures suspended the veteran voice from the show indefinitely. But they won't say why.

It has something to do with an incident on a plane.

"...The alleged incident occurred when he was “on a commercial flight back in May, and a passenger complained to a flight attendant about Thornton.”

Sources told the outlet that the pilot had to call ahead to have law enforcement meet Thornton when they arrived at the gate. The officers then questioned him, but he was ultimately released."

It's not clear how long he'll be off the show but the auditions are on for a replacement - temporary or otherwise.

Since he was released by law enforcement with apparently no charges laid, this sounds like a case of guilty until proven innocent by the folks at Sony.

It is indeed weird, but no one waits for bad publicity to die down anymore. You're accused, you're a liability, you're gone. Welcome to the new world.

In a way, I wish it would go to court. Then when he's being sworn in, he could say, "You're Honour, I'd like to buy avowal!"

Re: Wheel Of Fortune Announcer Suspended By Sony, But Won't Say Why

The hunt for a new announcer had better hurry. They've already recorded the first month of the new season's shows, and now they're going to try and dub whoever gets the job as the new voice. That won't be easy.

"The first month of the game show has already been filmed, with Thornton as the announcer. Producers are re-editing those episodes with a new announcer, who has not yet been publicly named.

A source called this a “major undertaking.”

I'll say.

All this and still no indication that he actually did anything wrong.

Re: Wheel Of Fortune Announcer Suspended By Sony, But Won't Say Why

The reasons for Jim Thorton's suspension (firing?) from Wheel of Fortune have emerged, and they're disturbing, both for what he's accused of doing and the possible innocent explanation for it. Both sides sound fairly convincing, but it appears to have cost him his job for good.

And once this gets around, he may be unemployable anywhere else.

I think Thornton’s broadcasting career is toast. Even if he’s innocent, the stigma of this incident will follow him. What gets me is that he was viewing the suspect website on a commercial flight.

You are correct. He was officially fired by Sony on Friday and will never be back on "Wheel."
