Joe Bowen's Replacement Finally Appears To Have Been Named

There's nothing completely official yet, but the idea of TV audio on radio won't be happening this coming Leafs season. The organization has finally named the replacement for longtime play-by-play man Joe Bowen, who retired at the end of last season after more than 40 years on the air.

The new guy in the gondola is said to be Todd Crocker. You may not know the name, but he knows the organization - he's been the voice of the AHL Toronto Marlies for a while.

"Crocker is already familiar to many Leafs fans through his work as the play-by-play voice of the Toronto Marlies, the organization's AHL affiliate. He has been responsible for calling Marlies games and has developed considerable experience describing the prospects and players who make their way through the Maple Leafs' system.

More importantly, this wouldn't be Crocker's first time calling an NHL game for the Maple Leafs.

In January 2025, Crocker filled in for Bowen when the longtime broadcaster took an extremely rare night off to watch Notre Dame play Ohio State in the College Football Playoff national championship game."

The announcement can't come too soon - the preseason starts in less than a month. The first game comes Sept. 19th with a split squad vs. Ottawa and Montreal.

Here's a sample of Crocker's work from the Marlies Calder Cup championship finale.

Has anyone actually carried the Marlies on radio? Even playoff games? Re the video ... ROFLing to watch blue and white with a maple leaf emblem win a championship (note the Nylander jersey).

Interesting

There are lots of opinions on the Leaf fans boards being offered & a large number of them are not flattering towards Mr. Crocker.

Some say he is not of a high enough caliber while others think the hire is Rogers way of once again doing things on the - surprise - cheap.

Remember they had their radio guys call Leaf road games from a tv monitor.

I will say I agree with the above comments straight from the lips of Leaf fans.

I don't think Todd Crocker was in anyway the best candidate available either.

But he is "local" & no doubt working for cheap

..."you're hired"...

Re: Joe Bowen's Replacement Finally Appears To Have Been Named

I think people's reaction to the replacement of a long time icon is always go to be negative. It takes time for someone new to ingratiate themselves to a longtime fanbase. As someone who has heard Todd's work since his days as the voice of the Hamilton Bulldogs in the late 1990's he has paid his dues. This is a perfect example of biding your time, perfecting your craft and getting the opportunity to make it to the big league. Put me at the front of the pack in leading the applause for Todd's new job.
