The Patty Duke Show Episode That Took Place In A Radio Station

I have to credit SOWNY member Lorne’s Oldies Board for bringing this blast from the past back into my cob-webby memory banks.

It highlighted the Patty Duke Show, a 60s TV sitcom with the ridiculous premise of two “identical teenage cousins” and the trouble they got into. In one episode, Patty “discovered” a singing duo called “Nigel & Patrick,” played by real life hitmakers Chad & Jeremy.

The story involved trying to get the talented two on the radio so they could land a record contract. One of the cousins, Cathy, just happened to work at her high school radio station as a classical music DJ, (classical music at a high school station in the mid-60s! Really?) and the episode involves Patty scheming to get their rock record on the otherwise very staid format.

It wasn’t anywhere close to reality, of course, but it sure was fun to think about what radio was like in those days.

Chad & Jeremy only had a few hits in North America, the biggest of which was “A Summer Song.” Their “Yesterday’s Gone” also made the charts here and they perform both on the show. The script was silly and at times unbelievable but it sure was fun seeing that old episode again.

Chad and Jeremy were also on Dick Van Dyke in the episode the Redcoats Are Coming:

I'd completely forgotten about that one! Another fantastic episode.

It really looked like their management was trying to sell them as Beatle-like personalities in North America. But it didn't work in the end.

A Summer Song was their only top 10 on the Hot 100 peaking at #7 in 1964. Yesterday's Gone reached #21.
