Newstalk 1010's John Moore Show Loses An Hour

John Moore announced this morning on-air on 1010 that his show is being shortened to 6am-9am vs. the current 6am-10am. What happens in that 9am-10am slot is due to be announced tomorrow.

Moore indicated this was at his request and he'd been looking at retirement for a few years now. But that with his 2:30am rise time, that last hour felt like a grind and the difference between 3 and 4 hours on-air for the morning show was not insignificant. Part of the concession about helping his pace was the month-long vacation he just returned from.

Re: Newstalk 1010's John Moore Show Loses An Hour

I often wondered why they had him doing that extra hour. It never really made sense, given how crazy a morning show can be. If it means keeping him on air, then it's a good thing.

I'm surprised they're not extending Jerry Agar's two hours to three. But I will be surprised if that's what they spring on us Thursday.

Re: Newstalk 1010's John Moore Show Loses An Hour

I actually think what 1010 is missing most is a good dual-host debate format. Going way back, they had "The Motts", "Two Bald Men With Strong Opinions" with Michael Coren and Stephen LeDrew, later "Friendly Fire" with Ryan Doyle and Tarek Fatah, and then "The Rush" 's configuration with Jay Michaels and Ryan Doyle (and then the short-lived Reshmi Nair and Scott MacArthur configuration).

It'd be fun to have a 9-10 hour in a dual host quick-debate format, although admittedly that might be a bit much for many people starting their day and settling into the office or working from home.

Maybe they'll do a 1 hour John Tory show every morning in that slot.

I hope they extend agar's show.
Or, bring back robert turner's show.

Re: Newstalk 1010's John Moore Show Loses An Hour

Moore repeated the announcement in the soon-to-be new 9 AM hour, saying if they hadn't given him that time off, he likely would have retired altogether. He also said he asked for summers off, as they get in Quebec, where he was raised. I think that was a non-starter, and it would be a ridiculous move to have your main morning man off for three months at a time, regardless of who replaces him.

He also revealed that Bell Media once had a rule that every morning show at its stations had to start at 5 AM - something he was relieved they didn't apply to him. But he was stunned when they told him he could begin at 6 in the morning - but had to cover the extra 9 AM hour.

I take two things from all this, although admittedly they're all supposition.

It could mean that next summer, we'll be hearing less of Moore and more of Tory or some other sub. And if he's seriously started thinking of retirement, as he's stated, then how much longer do you think he'll remain on the show? I've found that once those wheels start turning in your brain, they generally don't stop until you arrive at your final destination - getting out of the game entirely.

It should be interesting to watch how all this unfolds going forward.

Rumour is the 9 to 10 am hour will be 'Frank Leo Presents', with 60 minutes of jaw-dropping success stories about desperate home sellers miraculously rescued by Frank, and his wonderful 'associates', brought to you by Jiffy App.  Don't miss it!

One hour of John Tory?
Where no one else gets a word in, with 5 miniute long questions and 10 second guest answers.
Does John Tory get paid by the word?

Stranger things have happened, but Robert Turner is in management now at the station so is unlikely to want to do double duty with show prep and on-air hosting. His "Early Edition" was a function of him board-opping the morning show back in the day so he was available a half hour on-air before he switched to board duties, and they actually had a live overnight board op who would op Turner's show as the final thing as the overnight board op was just finishing up their shift.

I'm pretty sure Walter meant that as a joke. It's not going to happen.

Re: Newstalk 1010's John Moore Show Loses An Hour

I would think they could copy in the morning what they do in the afternoon. They bring in a new person for a 1 hour show at 9am, but when Jerry is off that same person would stay until noon. If this person ends up being really good, they could also fill in for John, and just maybe groom this person to be the new morning host when John moves to part-time or really retires.

Great idea.
But, I hope they don't make the same mistake that they did when they let Reshmi take over the rush.
Or another mistake they could make, they get the pro-america mark patrone on the far-right to take over.

No danger of Patrone coming over from Sauga 960. Besides, I think he lives in Florida, not that that would stop him from broadcasting to Toronto. But I'm 100% certain he's definitely not someone they would ever consider.

Good.
1010 is a normal centre-right and centre-left station.
Maybe bell will get mark towey as host permanently?
I would personaly love that.

Maybe the "enforced retirement" individuals of John Oakley or Mike Stafford of AM640 will get an hour-long daily show.

Re: Newstalk 1010's John Moore Show Loses An Hour

I hear Moore has laid off a third of his staff Howard Stern-style. That's about two dozen research assistants, production assistants and makeup support affected.

I keed, but no doubt the vacant hour will be filled with more useless PR slop.

How about Alex Pierson to fill that hour? I hear she's free - eventually.
