More Proof That Global's Noon News In Montreal Is Irrelevant

August 3rd is a civic holiday in Ontario, a day off so unofficial it has different names in different areas. (I think it's "Simcoe Day" here,)

As has been discussed here before, Global's pitiful noon newscast that airs from 12-12:30 PM weekdays, is broadcast in both provinces, although there's only token mention of anything Quebec in the show. They might do a story or two about a local issue or an accident and they give a very brief and cursory weather forecast for the area, but other than that, it's almost all Toronto.

If you ever needed proof it's just an afterthought for that market, look no further than the August long holiday weekend. Global Toronto gave its staff the day off for the early show, but it's not a holiday in Quebec. That means they probably should have had a regularly scheduled newscast.

Instead they got the same thing local viewers here did - a rerun of renovation show "Backyard Builds." If Global can't do a newscast in a place where there's no reason for a day off, then perhaps they shouldn't run it at all. If I lived there, I'd be insulted by the fact my province is second class.

CBC ran their regular News Channel programming here while CTV replaced their local noon news with CTV News Channel. Why they never simulcast CP24, which is still doing local programming, is beyond me.

In addition to Quebec, Newfoundland/Labrador and the Yukon do not celebrate the Civic Holiday Monday.

Global's problem is they don't have a traditional national news channel with programs they could simulcast. I think they would do better if they had Noon edition of Global National.

But they do, they have a streaming news channel that they could have just simulcasted

Union rules probably limit how much CFTO can replace its programming with CP24 programming. CFTO News and CP24 are separate bargaining units.

Rights issues may prevent Global from flipping a switch and simulcasting its streaming news channel on broadcast. Any external content, including news footage and production sound and graphics, which they licensed for their streaming news channel: did they pay a broadcast rate with a contract allowing over-the-air broadcast, or just a streaming rate?

The streaming channel is usually a lot more restricted in what they can carry compared to the TV broadcasts eg) sports highlights don’t usually run on streaming so Global makes a version with CP stills instead (footage that’s run on TV simulcast is OK). And it also wouldn’t be the first time the streaming channel has been simulcasted on Global TV before.

Re: More Proof That Global's Noon News In Montreal Is Irrelevant

I spotted this online on the holiday Monday. It's extremely odd to say the least. As far as I can tell, it's also extremely false.

No CTV News Montreal broadcast on Aug. 3, 2026

Why? The very brief copy indicated that Monday is a federal holiday in Canada. From every bit of research I can find, the first Monday in August is most definitely not a federal stat, and it's not a civic day off in Quebec either, unlike much of the rest of Canada.  And just what is a "federal civic holiday" supposed to mean, anyway?

So technically, they put out a not very credible excuse to viewers to explain giving their staff the day off. Very bizarre from a normally credible news organization.

I wouldn't categorize it as pitiful overall. It's a decent try and the anchors are competent and deliver as good as any other.
For the Montreal viewers it is glaringly thin in local content. Today with the slightly revamped approch they began with a Montreal based story.

And for the first time I can remember, two anchors sitting at the desk together. At least at the end of the show.
