Are TV & Radio Weather Warnings About To Be Simplified?

Do you know the difference between a thunderstorm watch and a thunderstorm warning? How about an orange level alert vs. a yellow one? I'm guessing a lot of people have no idea what any of that means, and now a new survey from the Meteorological Service of Canada wants to change that.

Just months after issuing new "colour-coded" warnings for various conditions, it appears the weather solons are reconsidering how you should see this stuff on TV and radio, in order to make it easier to figure out what they're telling you.

According to Blacklocks Reporter, the changes would see the current alerting system move from 28 different terms to fewer than 20, and make them more obvious to listeners and viewers.

"The report said by example, current alerts for “freezing rain,” “freezing drizzle” and “flash freeze” would be covered with a simple warning of “icy conditions.” Separate advisories for fog, dust, snow, blowing snow and blizzard conditions would be replaced with a “visibility” hazard."

Now if only they could make the skies clearer, as well!

No word on when or if these changes will be implemented, but if they are, the forecasts you hear on radio and especially TV should be easier to comprehend.

The only thing they needed to do was update the awful text-to-speech system they use for broadcast alerts...... everything else was fine before

I have always known that a "watch" means it might happen whereas a "warning" means it likely will. Not a clue what a yellow or orange notification means.

The way I remember which one is the one we need to pay attention to and take seriously is this easy sentence: Watch out for the warning.

So yellow means it might happen. Orange means it likely will. Got it.
