SiriusXM's Howard Stern's Latest Moves Stuns His Staff & Listeners

For many years, radio shock jock Howard Stern became famous for the things he said on air. But now it's the things the King Of All Media did off air at SiriusXM that's stirring controversy.

Stern has fired dozens of staffers, claiming he doesn't need them anymore. The reason? He's cutting back his schedule, going live only one day a week. The rest of the time will be filled with rerolls.

I can't help but wonder what people who subscribed just to hear him will think about this and how it will affect their plans to continue paying a bill for the service for only one new show every seven days. This all comes on the heels of Stern signing a new contract, after rumours flew earlier in the year that he was planning on retiring altogether.

Howard Stern lays off a dozen staffers, preparing to drop to one new show per week

He is on summer hiatus , for nine weeks, one of which is already completed. He doesn't go into a studio anymore, just does his end from home with everyone else on Zoom or something similar. If he can get  away with it, why not. His life is mainly devoted to his wife's endeavours regarding cat rescue, and children's books. I will always respect his accomplishment in changing radio , even though his show is really atrocious  at times.

One of the comments after the article says that Howard Stern has turned into the thing he hated the most, Don Imus. And he doesn't do that very well.

SiriusXM has been sliding IMO, and this is just another example.  I didn't have the service for a few years and I do again after they offered me a guaranteed permanent low monthly rate after my free three months ran out.  I have noticed more issues with sound quality and 70's on 7, 80's on 8 and 1st Wave just don't seem to be as good as a few years ago.  70's on 7 and 80's on 8 both play a lot of fluff now.

How many staff did Stern have for his show?  He still will have some even after letting twelve go.

It's clear he has lost interest in the job. That happens in other occupations too. But to do what he did - as evaluated here by Bill O'Reilly - was very low.

He is 72. If he's just retired all his staff would have been laid off. As for O'Reilly's take, continuing for 6 years after you supposedly "blew up" your audience isn't exactly cause and effect.

He really should just retire.

Fair point.
He should retire from Sirius XM and do a movie where he's trying to tell everyone he's retired, but nobody believes him...

This kind of smells like stunting. A similar thing happened during last year’s hiatus.

O'Reilly doesn't look well at all.
