Is Friday's Noon News The Shape Of Things To Come For The Next Month?

I know the World Cup being in Toronto is not only exciting for most, but also historic - the first time such a game has ever been played in the GTA.

It's all very thrilling - except if you don't care about it in any way. I'm not a killjoy but this event could not have less relevance to me. And so it was with some trepidation that I turned on the various local TV noon newscasts on Friday. What I saw was exactly what I feared.

The game was still hours away and Global spent the first 12 minutes of its noon show hyping this thing to the sky, before moving on to actual news, including the latest on the hunt for a suspect in the killing of a Toronto police officer.

CTV Toronto was even worse. I continually glanced at my watch as they went on and on and on and on for 24 minutes (!) about the Canada-Bosnia match. They interviewed people on the street, folks at Fan Fest, half drunk jerks at a local bar, 4-year-olds who probably don't even know what FIFA is and anyone who just happened to be in the area, whether they knew anything about the "beautiful game" or not. What a waste of air time!

CBC News Network abandoned all pretence of actually bringing real headlines to the screen, going wall-to-wall with the upcoming match, and avoiding all other stories for well over half an hour, minus commercials.

This is exactly what I was certain would happen - everyone has jumped on the hypemobile, and it's moving so fast, they don't know when to get off.

If this is what's going to happen for the next month, it's going to be a very long stretch between now and mid-July. Cover it, absolutely, it's an historic time. But make room for real news, too. Because it doesn't stop just because someone is kicking a ball around.

I guess what P.T. Barnum said was true. To paraphrase him, "There's a soccer born every minute."

Never implied for a moment that it was. But news should still report news, not 25 minutes of hype. There are other stories out there and some of them are important.

I don't see the benefit of interviewing a 5-year-old about her feelings on The World Cup - which they did. It's not cute, it's just a time waster by the rights holder to the Cup games looking to feed on the publicity. And this is only Day One!

I have noticed in the past that local TV stations tend to drag out stories like this, or the Leafs first home game if they make the playoffs, same thing with the Jays last post season, etc. I agree they should cover it, but not for the body of the broadcast. This is where the producer should have better judgment and be sure to include the other top news stories.

I now have a new plan to watch CTV News at 6. Turn it on at 6:20 to see the two other news stories of the day, the weather, Pat Foran and I'm done. That way I can avoid all the endless FIFA hype.

Re: Is Friday's Noon News The Shape Of Things To Come For The Next Month?

My father-in-law invited himself here for the weekend, and tonight had put on CJOH/CTV Ottawa just as my wife and I were coming back from picking up dinner a few minutes ago. At the start of the 6:30 cast, what else but the headline "World Cup Fever In Ottawa", followed by "Breaking News" that Dumbass Donny down south opened his piehole yet again and spouted more lies re Iran. This, of course, was followed by at least ten minutes of some lame local angles on the World Cup.

Um, there is a hell of a lot more going on in the world than just the current U.S. presidency and the World Cup. And showing DJT's face, playing his voice or quoting him (esp. with screenshots of his TS posts) is a great big slap in the face to all of us who have suffered narcissistic abuse.

I am never again watching another Bell Media channel or using their online offerings.
