The network's numbers have predictably taken a dive, while their competitors' 11:35 PM programs have gained audience. Despite that, CBS doesn't seem too concerned.
Kimmel, Fallon & Byron Allen Ratings Revealed: How Is CBS Doing Without Colbert?
Offline
The Ellison Family's job for little Donny (and in order to be approved to buy Warner Bros.) was to kill the Colbert show. They did.
They then sold the late night time slot to Byron Allen for a ton of money. Estimates are $15,000,000.
So, with the savings from the late show cancellation and the 15 million from Allen, CBS and the Ellison's have made a profit. Since Allen's paying all production costs and for the airtime, CBS doesn't care if it gets ratings or not.

I wonder if it would have made sense for Colbert to have bought the timeslot for $15 million and sold his own advertising?

The fix was in on Colbert to appease Diaper Donny. The production costs for the Late Show annually were around a hundred million $$. CBS claimed they were losing 40 million a year on the nightly program.
Colbert's annual salary was $15,000,000. There were 200 staffers involved with the show, plus the cost and expenses of maintaining the Ed Sullivan Theatre, a building which this November will be 99 years old.
We'll have to wait and see how 60 Minutes will be affected by their right wing bias and the fact that Bari Weiss (the current head of CBS News) and Nick Bilton (the brand new chief of 60 Minutes) are neophyte broadcasters
