Another Big Shake-Up Rocks CBS' Venerable Institution "60 Minutes"

The dismantling of one of the oldest and most storied news shows on TV continues, with some huge shake-ups at the venerable "60 Minutes."

Re: Another Big Shake-Up Rocks CBS' Venerable Institution "60 Minutes"

Sharon Alfonsi, a now former 60 Minutes correspondent who was fired by the network on Thursday, has let loose with a peak behind the curtain at the troubled CBS News.

Alfonsi was the reporter whose story was held back from the show, although it accidentally aired here on Global, going viral in the process. The head of CBS News insisted it wasn't complete and pulled it the night it was supposed to air. The correspondent blamed political interference from the highest levels of government. It eventually did get shown several weeks later, almost completely intact but not before it badly damaged the network's reputation.

You rarely get to read something like this when someone is unceremoniously cut loose, but Alfonsi did not hold back.

“In the coming days, network leadership may attempt to hide behind corporate euphemisms like “modernization” and “restructuring” to explain away my departure. Don’t be misled,” she continued. “This was not a routine corporate transition; it was a deliberate choice to penalize a journalist for refusing to sanitize factually accurate reporting, and it sends a chilling message to the entire newsroom.”

It's 'government-aligned' media now.

It wasn't just Alfonsi who walked the plank at CBS Thursday. Correspondent Cecilia Vega was also unceremoniously turfed for what looks like no apparent cause. She issued a statement on her final day at 60 Minutes and it's quite a remarkable document.

It is scary how the media has come under attack in the US. I lived in Africa and in counties where the governments did go after the press, but in a way you put up with it as you could get the real news elsewhere at the time, BBC, VOA & RCI for example.

But I, like many of us, am surprised at how the angry orange is really cracking down on the press, right down to insulting them to their faces, “shut up, Piggy”, comes to mind.

Civility dies in darkness, along with the truth. 2 1/2 years is still way too long!

CBS News seems bound and determined to ruin the only thing that is still popular with viewers from the news division.  If they are not careful they will kill the 60 Minutes golden goose.

On the Media did a deep dive into the history of CBS News this week. Interesting stuff.

I can't link to this story but the New York Times has issued an exclusive that indicates Scott Pelley, the de facto lead reporter for CBS' 60 Minutes, tore a strip off his boss and his new producer in a private meeting at the network on Monday.

According to the Times, which got its hands on a recording of the session, what they describe as Pelley's "voice shaking with anger," accused the new executive producer of the show, a guy named Nick Bilton, of having no television experience and knowing nothing about the inner workings of arguably the most successful TV news show in history.

He also insisted that Bari Weiss, the new head of CBS News, was deliberately trying to "murder" 60 Minutes.

"She is murdering ‘60 Minutes,’” the correspondent said. “She does not love this place. She was brought in to kill it, and she’s been doing exactly that.”

Mr. Pelley added: “She has no qualifications for her job; you have slender qualifications for this job. The changes that she’s made at the ‘Evening News’ have been catastrophic, so why should we expect that any of this is going to be any better?”

For his part, Bilton explained he wasn't planning any immediate major changes to the show and tried to reassure the staff that's left after several firings that it would be business as usual.

When Bilton departed, the remaining staff in the meeting reportedly gave Pelley a standing ovation.

After dismissing correspondents Sharon Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega last week, you have to wonder if they would dare fire Pelley, nominally the face of the show in recent years.

At this point, it looks like the internal turmoil at the classic news magazine will be far more interesting to watch than any of its upcoming stories.

Finally found a linkable article. Wow, what's going on at 60 Minutes is simply incredible. It's an open revolt and there are signs it will not stop anytime soon. This a remarkable - and sadly true - story, the kind 60 Minutes itself might have told in any other circumstance.

WOW! I wonder how Mike Wallace would have reacted if he was still with us.

He would've done what Peckinpah did when displeased. He would've whipped out his dick and pissed on the Management.
