Not sure what prompted this story from Buffalo-Toronto Public Media, but it shows how radio played a huge role in the msn who eventually became known as Buffalo Bob Smith. It traces his history in the medium, where he was #1 in the market at two stations.
The forgotten past of a long ago childhood TV icon.
For Buffalo Bob Smith, It Was Always ‘Howdy Doody Time’

I saw him at a Buffalo Broadcasters Association gathering in 1998. He performed like a man half his age, full of life. I was stunned when he died the following month of cancer.

Speaking of Howdy Doody, my former landlord who I am still friends with, was downsizing as he was selling his house. He had his original Howdy Doody lunchbox from when he was a kid in the 50s and gave it to me. It is in decent shape and now on my bookshelf, next to the Fireball XL5 one! They were actually well made by today’s standards.

I watched Fireball XL5 on Saturday Mornings. NBC ran it at 10;30 following Underdog which I also enjoyed.

Fireball XL5 had one of the best theme songs ever! It's pretty much forgotten today, but it could have been a hit record. (I think it was released in Britain and reached #32 on their charts.)
