CFRB Traffic Reporter Gets Caught On Phone During On Air Segment

I've been listening to traffic reports on the air for years and while I've heard silence where the update is supposed to be, I've never heard this before. At 10:45 AM Monday, Jerry Agar threw to his regularly scheduled road conditions update.

What listeners heard next was bizarre. The woman doing the report (I think her name is Telly Cohen) was caught on the phone, hurriedly telling the person on the other end in a panicked voice, "I gotta go!" Agar thought it was hilarious and said "yes, you do - you have to do a traffic report!"

I'm assuming she was getting an update from a caller or a source, but it was very strange and you have to wonder - given how many times they're on the air within a given hour - how it doesn't happen more often.

I actually thought it was hilarious and very human. I laughed a lot. I didn't think it was bizarre at all. Things happen at work and during live broadcasting all of the time.

I agree with you. It was a great human moment that could happen to anyone. And I laughed out loud as well, especially with Agar's reaction. It's just not something you often hear on radio. But wouldn't you love to know who she was talking to?

That's why anytime you're within earshot of a mic you watch what you say. But that's a truth anyone who has even dabbled in radio knows...

That's a truism of the business. But I have to say, having been in radio and TV for more than three decades, the people who work in the business have the foulest mouths of anyone I've ever known. Kind of a strange irony.

Maybe they need to truly express themselves and vent after holding it in behind the mic?

I have always believed that to be the reason. For some, if they don't let it out eventually, they may self-destruct :-)

That reminds me of a CBC online article the other day about an academic's report about CSIS agents and the trauma of keeping secrets when those secrets involve human horrors (seeing real and images of dead people, including children, for instance). And not being able to share that trauma (anything to do with work, in fact) with a spouse, trusted family member or even a shrink outside the organization.

Re: CFRB Traffic Reporter Gets Caught On Phone During On Air Segment

Speaking of on-air mistakes, after CFRB's 8 PM news on Monday, they played Lindsay Morrison's weather.

The only problem? It was Friday's forecast, in which she talked about all the rain expected on Saturday, the cool down and how it could snow on Sunday and why the kids may need jackets going back to school on Monday. Good to know because now I'm ready for last week!

I was wondering if it was a child or a spouse, but yes, I'd love to know.

Telly is a juggler! She is doing the traffic on CP24 this week as "Mietel Sperling" and on 1010 on the quarters as "Tali Cohen". Probably needs to use that name since I believe she also has a radio gig as Meitel on 94.9 the rock. Great traffic reporter.

What happened to Lisa Morales, who's been doing morning traffic on 1010 for years?

I assume just on a "spring break" vacation?

And here's a short look at her as "Meital Sperling," in case you ever wondered what she looks like.

I knew that sounded like Meital. I worked at one of the stations that carried her traffic reports when she worked at Skywords.  in addition to traffic for Durham Radio's stations she pulls (presumably voicetracked) evening and weekend shifts on 94.9.

I noticed that as well, plus 1010’s regular morning newscaster, (McGane?) hasn’t been on for two weeks as well. I haven’t heard of any layoffs at Bell recently, must be on vacation, the non-permanent kind hopefully!

You're thinking of Stuart McGinn, and you're right - he's been off for a bit. With the way things are going at Bell Media, hopefully, it's a scheduled vacation and not a permanent one.

Regarding Ms. Sperling, I can't help but wonder where she came up with the pseudonym. "Telly Cohen?" What an odd name to choose.

I noticed on her own IG, listing the aka, she spells it "Tali Cohen". I too wondered if there was any origin story to it. Google Gemini suggests the following which could track:

Ease of Pronunciation: "Tali Cohen" is short, punchy, and phonetically simple for a wide variety of listeners to catch during quick 30-second traffic hits.

The "Tali" Connection: "Tali" is actually a common diminutive or nickname for Hebrew names like Meital or Avital. By using Tali, she is using a shortened version of her real name, making it less of a complete "fake" name and more of a professional variation.

In short, "Tali" is a natural nickname for Meital, and "Cohen" is a classic, easily recognizable surname that helps her maintain a professional, accessible persona for the fast-paced world of radio traffic reporting.

That's as reasonable an explanation as we're going to get, I suppose.

Thanks for the Stuart McGinn reminder RA!
