Two Bizarre Shows Return To Canada's History Channel This Week

I'm a big fan of the "The Foods That Built America" series that's been running for several years on the History Channel in both the U.S. and Canada. The series tells the story of some of the most famous foods or brands everyone knows and how they came to be.

The program has been off the air for a while now, but I just noticed a new season is debuting here on Wednesday at 9 PM. The first episode deals with how some famous national pizza franchises (like, perhaps, Dominos) came to be and how the Italian staple wound up as a favourite treat in North America.

It may sound a bit dull, but they come up with some amazing facts you never knew about stuff you eat and drink every day. And I always learn something about brands I've known my whole life but had no idea how they started.

The second show is called "Hazardous History" and is hosted by Henry Winkler of all people. It picks the bizarre things kids, teens and even adults used to do when we were all growing up, little realizing the danger they posed. Yet somehow we all survived. The first season was a lot of fun. I expect after all this time off, the second will be just as good. That airs at 10 PM Wednesday.

If you're looking for something different, these definitely hit the spot and I can't recommend them highly enough.

Here's a sample of the "Food" show from seasons past that will open your eyes about a battle of the food equivalent of the Hatfield and the McCoys and how they started - Coke vs. Pepsi. You'll need a VPN to see it.

And here's a small sample of the Winkler show, with a segment on the inventions that poisoned us, with a VPN.

I haven't seen any word on if the Swamp People related show about the python hunting in the Florida everglades has a new season. In past years it has aired along side Swamp People but this season so far no episodes have been aired. It always amazes me how they grab these monsters with their bare hands, especially that little gal Pickle Wheat.  She has more balls than I will ever have. swamp people python invasion - Search Images

This popular series begins its 7th season Wednesday. The first episode of this season is entitled "Pizza Power Play" I wonder if it is an update on the season 2 premiere "Pizza Wars" which dealt with Domino's vs Pizza Hut.

Of the "That Built" series franchise, Food has been the most successful. Other series that aired include Men, Cars, Titans, Toys, Mega Brands, Icons, Engineering and Disney. Then there was also the Booze, Bets and Sex That Built America. I watched all of them. Extremely well done.

The new season debuted on U.S. History Channel Sunday night and I was lucky enough to see the first episode. They look at the epic epicurian battle between Pizza Hut, Dominos and Little Caesar's, how they started out with a single store and how they all tried to one-up each other to become the top earning pizza chain in North America.

And two of the entrepreneurs actually wound up owning the Detroit Tigers!

It's a fascinating hour and well worth your time. And I don't even like pizza all that much!

OMG! I love pizza. My standard is thin crust with double cheese, double ground beef, bacon, pepperoni and [don't forget the vegie] green pepper. My go to place is Buzz Buzz, a little mom&pop shop that has been located on Wilson west of Dufferin for almost 42 years so they must be doing something right. My back up is the 736-free sex, free sex place.

I love pizza too. My go to is thin crust, well done, double cheese, Pepperoni and hot banana peppers. If I'm feeling it, I'll occasionally add ... horror  ... pineapple.

I too use a local joint, one location that's been cooking up amazing pizza since 1975.

How do the rest of Big Yeller like their pie?

I was surprised to see a familiar face on Henry Winkler's "Hazardous History" episode - Dr. Dan Riskin, Bell Media's Science Correspondent and a frequent guest on both John Moore's and Vashy Kapelos' shows on CFRB. Turns out both shows are produced in Ontario, presumably for the tax breaks, and a number of local folks often appear in them.
