Alan Cross Lets Loose A Tirade Against Spotify

The longtime Edge and Q107 broadcaster is angry at the music service for not doing more to help encourage and support the Canadian talent it plays.

For its part, the online music streamer insists it's exposing Canuck music to an audience that would otherwise never hear it.

But Cross isn't having any of it, concluding with "Get bent, Spotify. Pay your fair share."

Spotify is still trying to dodge investing in Canadian music

No problem, as long I can still choose not to listen to Canadian artists if that is what I desire.

in other words, after i listen to 40 min of led zeppelin and Bruce Springsteen, don't suddenly force me to listen to 10 minutes of summer of 69'
and that's the issue with forcing Canon on digital media. a medium about user choice cannot be regulated the same way we are!

Re: Alan Cross Lets Loose A Tirade Against Spotify

It's a real mess.

Spotify pays out significantly more than Apple by revenue since they have a free ad-supported tier. It also didn't make a profit at all until 2024 while Apple can run music as a loss-leader. And the kids are are listening on YouTube which has the same split model as Spotify.

Meanwhile, people are used to having unlimited access to music for free with ads, or without ads for less than the cost of a CD per month. There's no going back on that without pushing people back to piracy.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Exactly!. When I initally found Spotify, I tried the free version. I had to listen to two or three songs of their choice before I could hear the song I desired. $10/month lets me hear what I want, when I want.
