It's not the ground breaking show it used to be, but CBS's "60 Minutes" has been around since before many here were even born. It's the longest running primetime show in U.S. network history and this Sunday, it celebrates half a century on the air.
The preview for the anniversary special, which you can watch here, looks terrific, especially the part when so many of the reporters look at their subjects and exclaim "oh, c'mon!" And of course, they have a lot of incredible stuff to choose from. (I always loved those Mike Wallace ambush interviews.)
If you do watch the preview, try and note what's not shown in the compilation of hosts.
Give up? There's not a frame of footage of recently fired and scandal-tainted Charlie Rose, who contributed a fair number of pieces to the show over the years.
Provided there are no more of those incredibly annoying football overruns, it airs in its longtime slot - Sunday night at 7 PM.

60 Minutes bounced around various time slots until it found its current home Sunday 7PM in Dec 1975. From 1977-2000 the show was out of the Neilsen Top 10 once. #11 in 96-97. It has been the top rated prime time program five times tieing it with Cosby and All In The Family. 79-80, 82-83 and 91-94. Only American Idol had a longer run of 8 seasons as Top rated prime time program. While no longer a Top 10 program, 60 Minutes has been out of the Top 20 once in the last 17 seasons. #21 in 05-06. Last season it finished a very respectable 12th.

Hey RA Regarding those "annoying football overruns" check your on screen guide if you are not an OTA person. If WIVB has a 4:25 game, 60 Minutes will air around 7:30. If WUTV has a 4:25 game, 60 Minutes will air at 7PM. The NFL season is 17 weeks long. Both CBS and FOX get 8 DH games. Week 17[Dec 31st this year] both networks have a DH game. The season ALWAYS starts the first Sunday after Labour Day. Hope this helps, if not for this year, in future seasons.

Thanks Mace. I've frankly given up trying to figure out when these games will end on either network. I only know that they always run over. In the past 10 years, I can't think of a single instance in which a late afternoon game didn't bleed into primetime.
I'm well aware this is a huge money maker for both CBS and Fox (although maybe not as much as it once was!) So unless all NFL games wind up on cable one day, this is going to be an endless irritant every year. My solution is simple - DVR the next show after the one I want so that at least I get to see the ending. Eats up disk space, but it's easily and quickly erased.
Annoying but it works.
As for 60 Minutes, it's generally seen as an older skewing series these days (as I'm sure the big Cheese will remind us all) but it's still capable of breaking some big stories, even if a lot of the big names who made it great (Mike Wallace, Morley Safer, Ed Bradley) are all in that great rerun vault in the sky. Judging by the online preview, I'm pretty sure we'll be seeing a lot of them this Sunday.
And actually I am an OTA guy, but I have a terrific box from Channel Master that works great as an over-the-air DVR that comes with its own programming guide. I highly recommend it for cord cutters with an antenna.

Oh I am very well aware of what an antenna can receive in the GTA. My parents had a 40 ft. tower and rotor in Oakville for over 30 years. They are gone now, but the tower is still there. Unfortunately, for me I live in an apartment that faces north so an antenna is not an option for me because I won't get the Buffalo stations. Isn't that the main reason for installing an outdoor antenna? Plus no simsub and a crisper picture.

One more thing RA. CBS has only 2 DH games remaining this year. Dec 17 and 31. The rest are on FOX.

I don't think so RA. FOX generally runs repeats in the Sunday 7PM slot which can easily be scrubbed. What ever time the game ends FOX will run "The OT" their postgame yakfest which can run up to 8PM. So Homer, Marge and the rest of the Springfield residents can entertain you in their regular scheduled time slot.
These days the show acts like it's 90+. Of course with the sponsors and shareholders having input...it's pretty much lost all of its teeth and therefore its bite. Time to pack it up and pack it in.
