AM640 Unveils Big Money Contest Promotion
They've given away packs of lottery tickets and passes to concerts. But this is the first time I can remember a big money contest from Corus' AM640. It's a prize worth $50,000, not an insubstantial amount and it's likely the biggest bounty they've ever offered.
As usual, the promotion is being used to drive listening with clues given at specific times of day, forcing you to tune in to enter the right info on its website.
I always find it a bit odd when a talk station does a big money contest, although I'm not sure why I feel that way. The promotion starts March 9th and ends on April 10th. Hmmm, can you see a ratings period coming? I thought you could.

640 listeners will be competing against listeners of 19 other Corus stations (including Q107) for that $50,000.

This isn't the first time they've tried to "share the wealth" among their various stations. Although at least this one is a little more mainstream - everyone can use that much cash. I, for one, could care less about soap operas!

Absolutely best contest ever was 1972's "The Last Contest" which was developed by San Diego's KCBQ. It was eventually offered to other North American Top 40 stations. CFTR ran it here.

There are some Last Contest promos that ran on CFTR in 1972 on Dale Patterson's Rock Radio Scrapbook site. They were amazingly produced and it really was the best radio promotion ever in my mind - promising hundreds of thousands of dollars in prizes, but giving away almost nothing. It was brilliant.
The aircheck starts with the CFTR Ripoff, which preceded The Last Contest.
I continued to be amazed while listening to it that they not only called people live on the air (what could go wrong? Plenty, as the recording proves.) but gave out their home addresses. That would never happen today.

Now that this Corus contest is on, I can't believe how ridiculous the premise is. Yes, it's only a stupid radio contest and it's supposed to be a promotion and the so-called "story" doesn't really matter. But it's just so dumb that every time I hear it, I shake my head. (You can probably hear the rattling from where you are.)
So me let get this straight - a thief has broken in and stolen a vault with $50,000 inside. And the only thing the "station" wants back is the vault and not the money? They're going to give you the contents of the vault, which is the really valuable thing? How does that make any sense?
Yes, too much analysis. But if you're going to run a long contest like this, shouldn't it at least make some kind of narrative sense?

I know I'm thinking waaaay to much about this stupid contest, but another thing just occurred to me. How, exactly, do you steal a vault? You can break into one and purloin a safe or even a safety deposit box. But a vault, by its very name, suggests a well protected room with locks and bars on it.
How do you steal an entire room?
Good luck to whoever wins this thing, but boy, this was not well thought out.
