The Number One Format In U.S. Radio Isn't What You'd Expect

It's not rock.

It's not talk.

It's not even country.

According to new stats from February, the #1 most common format on all of U.S. radio is religion.

And here I didn't think it had a prayer!

For The First Time, Religion Is America’s Most Programmed Format

Not surprising considering the plethora of Family Life Network stations and translators across NY and PA.  And then there's Joy FM, Smile FM, Relevant Radio, EWTN, Ava Maria Radio, K-Love, Air1 etc etc

I wonder how many kiddies in Lockport ask mommy or daddy to put the radio on 100.3 at 7 p.m. so that they can listen to Adventures In Odyssey on W262CQ?.

Religion is the number one format, in terms of the number of stations with that format.  Not to be confused with number one in ratings or listeners.  Contemporary Christian (K-Love type formats) come in fourth.  A total of 3,602 religion based stations in the US and growing.  Do the numbers include any rebroadcasters?

Doesn't surprise me at all. On the drive down to Florida I need SXM. Oterwise it's right wing talk NASCAR, cowboy music and Religion Religion Religion and Religion.

After all is said and done, more is usually said than done.

The vast majority are rebroadcasters.

In Canada and on this board we regularly ask the question, who will buy the station and what is the value of the stations.
In the USA the answer is a small group of business people who are also Christian. They found a way to pick up the transmitters cheap, and use cookie cutter type National programing. The programing is cheap. A pastor gives a talk on Sunday morning, it gets edited and turns into a radio show. You can't get programing much cheaper. My guess is, if they did not buy the stations how many would still be on the air.
