Happy 100th Birthday to CKNX

It does not seem very often you hear of an AM radio station in a small town turning 100, but todays the day.
The only station to my knowledge to have its beinging's in the middle of a snow storm with the call letters JOKE. And only 2 owners, both family owned. Sorry Bell and Rogers but the stations would be gone if you got your hands on it.
So Happy Birthday to CKNX AM 920.

Re: Happy 100th Birthday to CKNX

I am curious. How many of those 100 years have they been playing Country music?

Re: Happy 100th Birthday to CKNX

I had the pleasure of working at CKNX radio for six years.  It was a great place to be at with a lot of talented people. When I was there it was, and still is owned by the Blackburn family. Congratulations 920 CKNX radio and here's to many more successful years!  Doc Cruickshank is smiling today..

They likely have been country music in some form for most if not all of their 100 years.  Maybe not exclusively but as far as I know country has always been in their format.  Likely in the 50's into the early 70's they would have played some pop or top 40 music at some point in the day. The live CKNX Barn Dance on Saturday nights which featured traditional country music from local artists ran from 1937 to 1963 and was resurrected for a few years in the 90's.  There wasn't much radio available to that part of Mid Western Ontario so they likely would have some block music programming.

The History of Canadian Broadcasting page has a fascinating year-by-year breakdown of the station's storied history, although the site was discontinued before CKNX hit 100.

But what an amazing story it is, including one of its own being accidentally killed after 10 years doing mornings and the time the station burnt down leaving nothing left - yet still managed to get back on air that same afternoon.

Re: Happy 100th Birthday to CKNX

Every station has there slogan that helps in promotions. For CKNX it was " Ontario's Farm Station". This makes sense because most, if not all of the listeners are from the farming community.

The best one was for the Saturday Night Barn Dance.

They began the show by saying.

"From Coast to Coast, the music you like the most".
But as far as I know the show never aired outside of Wingham.

Sometimes the promotions radio and TV ( and to a lesser part Newspapers) bring back good memories but may have not been completely true.

I grew up in that area and remember the Saturday Night Barn Dance. It was all local talent. It was often done remotely from another community.

They may be a small station, but they're doing their 100th the right way on their website.

They even have a store offering hats and T-shirts, although they're pretty expensive.
