I know, I know - it's another article from the National Post about the CBC.
But before you jump to conclusions, this one actually makes a good point from a guy who is an open supporter of our national broadcaster. He's the V.P. of Great West Media, which serves large parts of Alberta. His premise: the Corp. recently announced it was using a new infusion of cash to expand the number of reporters in bureaus across the country.
Tim Shoults wonders why they're sending more people to areas that are already served by radio, TV and newspapers, and not smaller parts of the country that have almost nothing.
"I have no problem with CBC stepping in to fill the gap in actual news deserts — communities that have lost their local news organizations, either recently or many years ago.
But covering communities that are well-served by local media just because CBC doesn’t have a presence there isn’t useful — if anything, it could make it harder for those local outlets to survive. I have a problem with that."
Love the CBC or hate it, I think he makes an interesting point.
CBC should go where other media can’t — not where they already are

Tim Shoults makes a great point here, worth the quick read. He also mentioned that the CBC is pouching talent from existing media in these markets as the CBC can offer higher salaries, this bothers me as it is our tax bucks involved, working against the private sector who is currently struggling and probably will from now on.
