Could You Lose Some NFL Games To Streaming?

NFL executives, whose greed knows no limits, are angry that NBC paid more for the rights to carry NBA games than it did for football. And they may invoke a clause in their contract to renegotiate rights to a game package that could see at least 15 games or more go to a streaming service.

"The league is pissed that NBC is paying $500 million more for their NBA deal than their deal with the shield, per John Ourand, who is one of the most reputable sources covering the financials of sports.

Here’s what Ourand said on his podcast:

Executives at the NFL are irritated. That deal irritated them. The idea that NBC is paying more for Sunday Night Basketball than for Sunday Night Football. These are people and personalities and it makes the executives at the NFL crazy that that happens."

One possible advantage if the league decides to go to a Netflix or a Disney? You could finally have some Saturday games. There's a rule in place down south that states there can be no NFL games on the first day of the weekend, to protect college and high school football.

But streaming doesn't fall under that rule, because it's technically not considered a "broadcaster." So while you might have to pay to see them, there could theoretically be even more football available more often.

And one more thing - if the NFL does go to a streaming service, would that mean it automatically applies to Canada? Stay tuned. you're not likely to see a full retreat to the web, but it could kick off big changes to network TV.

The NFL will likely lean into streaming for their next broadcast rights deal

I couldn't find any specific details about Bell's current contract for NFL Canadian telecasts. The current "long term multi-year" contract was signed in June 2022. As for Canadian streaming, DAZN signed a 10 year deal with the league in 2023.

Currently, the DAZN basic tier gives you access to every NFL game, some UFC, Darts and more soccer than I would care to watch [which is none] for $24.99/month. Since I only care about the NFL, it would only cost me about $100 for a four month subscription which is way cheaper than the $300 Rogers wants for Sunday Ticket.
