Before he was the voice of the Leafs for what seems like forever, Joe Bowen called the Sudbury Wolves games. And the tradition continued when his son became the voice of the team.
Appropriately enough on Family Day, enjoying a rare NHL break because of the Olympics, Bowen Sr. was able to go back to Sudbury and call a game with his kid - for dad, a rare dream come true.
“It is a full circle, really is,” he said.
“I mean, we had some wonderful teams here when I first started broadcasting back in the 1970s. Well, that’s a long time ago. But it was a lot of fun.”
Not only that, but the Wolves won the game.
Joe Bowen comes home to Sudbury to broadcast a Wolves game with his son

I briefly considered going to the game, but the parking situation at the arena is ridiculous as the current mayor and council have destroyed the entire area surrounding the building for their vanity project 600 million dollar entertainment center . As I live in a surrounding community, I have no choice but to drive there or spend two hours on several buses. No thanks. Congrats to Joe Bowen.

On another Sudbury note, I just discovered yesterday , there is a seventh non French language radio station at 96.7 FM, CKLU which bills itself as a campus and community station, broadcasting from Laurentian University. I had never heard of this station until seeing a story on Sudbury News. ca about this being pledge week. They have a diverse line up of volunteer only shows including some in Indigenous languages. No commercials and listener funded , they invite people to drop by the studio to donate or make a pledge online . Yesterday, I kept it on in my work car, there was a Scottish music on for two hours with an announcer I could barely discern what he was saying, followed by a two hour jazz show, and then a reggae influenced one . The kicker for me is that they are looking for more volunteers and show ideas. I may just have to make a drive over to Ramsey Lake Road and check it out.

I like watching Leafs highlights on YouTube if I miss a game and this season I noticed "LeafsJellyHD" channel who do a great job syncing Joe's audio calls with video highlights. They do a great job merging the two medias into one and it's also good because SportsNet sometimes uses highlights from the opposing teams coverage so it's missing the Leafs voices I'm used to.

You'll be heading the wrong way! CKLU studios are inside The School Of Architecture downtown.

They are saying on the pledge drive announcements to come to Ramsey Lake road, maybe that is an office ? I don't expect I will ever get there in reality, just wishful thinking.

Just out of curiosity, do the Wolves draw well in attendance to their games. This year they don't seem to have a terribly competitive team. They currently sit in 8th place in the OHL Eastern Conference, ahead of only Brampton and Oshawa. I usually attene one Oshawa Generals game each year. Parking is not a problem. The arena restaurant serves pub food and has excellent variety of domestic and imported beers. Ticket prices are in the $15-$20 range. Not bad for three hours of entertainment. And boy does Oshawa love their Generals. Fans are boisterous, particularly if Peterboro is the visiting team and they are all decked out in General jersies with favourite players names on the back. A pretty fun way to spend an evening.

@ mace, to be honest, I have no idea about attendance. The games are broadcast live on the Eastlink channel on my tv package, I have never watched one. I do hear the game results on local news casts , they have had a dismal season. I have read previously that the team owner has said he would sell or move the team if the right offer was presented. I believe this was after the mayor and council opted to build the new entertainment center downtown and not make a deal with that developer who wanted to build one on his property known as the Kingsway Entertainment District. This gentleman also owns the Sudbury 5 basketball team. He has since made a deal with Gateway Casinos and the city to develop the afore mentioned property. My personal opinion is the local gov't is building a legacy for themselves with this downtown project that is going to cost the population for years to come in higher property taxes. As an example, I am already paying more for my house here than I did in Collingwood up to two years ago that was 2/3 bigger in land and house size. As I'm now 70 years old, and have some health issues, we are probably going to have to stay here and just pay pay pay. ![]()
