Crave Has A Big Hit With Heated Rivalry

Bell streamer Crave has a hit series that is quickly becoming an international success.  Their six episode first season of  the gay themed hockey romance, Heated Rivalry has seen very positive reviews and enthusiastic audience reactions.  So far the program has been a top streamed program in Canada, the US, Austrailia, New Zealand, Spain.  Heated Rivalry debuts this week on Sky in the UK.

One of the stars Hudson Williams was on the Tonight Show last night and on CNN today... https://www.cnn.com/2026/01/07/entertainment/video/heated-rivalry-hudson-williams-cnc

Re: Crave Has A Big Hit With Heated Rivalry

But it won't be another Schitt's Creek at the Emmys. That show famously won almost every award it was up for. But "Rivalry" won't be joining that club, despite it being the hot new show of the moment. You may be surprised at the reason why.

Why Heated Rivalry isn't eligible for the Emmys

Re: Crave Has A Big Hit With Heated Rivalry

Interesting that the series is not eligible for the prime time Emmy's because the program has no US partner.  HBO is not involved with the production and apparently won't be for season two either.  As the article says Heated Rivalry could win an International Emmy, which has different criteria than the prime time awards. But of course needs to get nominated first.

HBO decided to pick up the program only 9 days prior to running on Crave.  They also decided to run the series on HBO Max in the US and Australia on the same schedule as Crave.

Re: Crave Has A Big Hit With Heated Rivalry

I watched the first episode, I don't really get the hoopla. I didn't find any any outstanding acting performances. To each their own, it's not my cup of tea.

Re: Crave Has A Big Hit With Heated Rivalry

Jim Richards had Cynthia from CTV's the Social on his show last week to talk about the appeal of Heated Rivalry and hearing Jim's reaction to Cynthia saying how women are finally able to enjoy watching certain aspects of the intimate moments between the two men without being distracted comparing/judging bodies was equal parts amusing and.. informative?

Re: Crave Has A Big Hit With Heated Rivalry

According to one pundit, the success of this Canadian show proves the CRTC should stop interfering with the need to overly promote CanCon and let nature take its course. He argues if a show is good - like a Heated Rivalry or a Schitt's Creek - audiences worldwide will find it without the need for endless regulation.

"At the very moment Canadian content is proving it can break through on its own, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) published a new report floating the idea that Canadians need more rules telling platforms how to surface it.

Published Jan. 8, Audience at the centre: Discoverability, Promotion, and Prominence of Canadian Content Across the Broadcasting System proposes a framework under which the CRTC could set discoverability targets for services like Netflix or Disney+, requiring them to promote Canadian content (whether or not users are actually seeking it), and penalize platforms that fall short."

The show has been such a big hit, it's even invading real life.

Re: Crave Has A Big Hit With Heated Rivalry

A show needs to get made in the first place and needs to be discoverable.  That likely is the intent of any regulation that the CRTC will propose.  Naturally it will get challenged and could very well not get off of the ground.  Crave does a good job promoting their domestic product and their shows are just mixed in with everything else.  We want to avoid having Canadian product hidden or clustered together in some "Canadian Section."  I have watched movies on Crave and didn't realize until into the movie it was even Canadian.  Just treat the product like everything else and don't penalize it because you don't like regulation or because it is Canadian.  Simple...

Re: Crave Has A Big Hit With Heated Rivalry

While "Heated Rivalry" is a big hit down south, an upcoming Netflix hockey-related series may create controversy of a very different kind. And it's causing a huge stir in Saskatchewan, scene of that tragic bus crash that killed 16 players of the Humboldt Broncos in 2018.

The plot concerns a similar tragedy and the after effects in a small fictional Minnesota town. Those left behind from the real life disaster in Canada are not happy about dredging up such awful memories for a TV series.

"Netflix has not publicly said the series is inspired by the Humboldt Broncos, but even without a trailer, a release date or a name publicly available, the similarity of the plot alone is enough to raise questions."

New Netflix series about a hockey team's bus crash hits a nerve in Sask.

You'll never guess where "Heated Rivalry" has become a big hit - a place that isn't even allowed to show it.

Re: Crave Has A Big Hit With Heated Rivalry

You'd think a Canadian TV show would not be a hot topic at the Olympics, where athletes have other things to think about. But Crave's "Heated Rivalry" has become as popular with hockey players and Canadians attending the games in Milan as it has back home.

The hottest show in hockey, ‘Heated Rivalry,’ is embraced by fans and players at Winter Olympics

I am glad the series is doing well worldwide and has had a positive effect on interest in the NHL, but the series has zero interest for me.

Heated Rivalry shows Canadian content doesn’t need the CRTC’s help

The CRTC has to justify their existance someway.

Re: Crave Has A Big Hit With Heated Rivalry

You could also argue that Heated Rivalry or Schitt's Creek likely never would have been made in the first place without "endless" regulation.  Lot's of other Canadian shows have had success internationally beyond these two examples, and the most were set in Canada.

Re: Crave Has A Big Hit With Heated Rivalry

So what's next?

"In terms of the pipeline of new shows from Crave, there is Slo Pitch, which Bell Media announced with the headline ‘Beer, Lesbians and Baseball!’ From Shaftesbury, Boss & Co and Elliot Page’s Pageboy Productions, the half-hour mockumentary follows an underdog queer softball team. Buzz has been building around that one..."
