If you were a fan of CFNY in its Spirit Of Radio Days, stay tuned - you're going to be able to see the movie about the station next month - and best of all, it will be free.
TVO has announced it has acquired the rights to the long brewing radio documentary and will show it on the network and online.
This is great news for fans of the station's famous format or those just interested in local radio.
The story is on the Real Screen site, and while I can't get by the firewall, you can see what little of the story is available here.

So how did this doc avoid the rights issues that tied up the Muchmusic doc?

No music video clips, or clearance to use them

I believe the producer of the MUCH doc believed getting the clearance for the clips from Bell included the music clearance.

You’re right RadioAaron, and about a year ago it looked like they had reached an agreement between the producer Sean Menard and Universal Music, but I guess it fell through, I believe Crave still has the broadcast rights to it.

Looking forward to seeing it. NY was my station of choice during the hey day of the station.

Just a reminder that this long awaited documentary airs Tuesday night (Jan. 6th) on TVO at 9 PM Eastern. That means it should be in the guide for most DVRs if you want to set it up for then before you forget.
But it's not without controversy, even though it's set to air.
I listened to Toronto Mike's excellent interview with the director of the film, who has had, shall we say 'creative differences' with the company and creators behind it, and he's honestly not sure if the film he handed in - which was originally 90 mins. cut down to just 60 for the network - will be the one he actually edited. You can watch the podcast chat in the YouTube video below.
Either way, I'm looking forward to seeing it. It's become like Snuffleupagus on Sesame St. Everybody swears they've seen it, but no one ever seems to when it's there. The final cut - whoever's it is - will be on your TV screen Tuesday night - and quite possibly on TVO's site for online viewing afterwards, depending on the rights situation.
