Two U.S. Networks Showing The Same Special - How Is That Possible?

I noticed on Thursday that the Rose Parade was being shown on both NBC and ABC. I suppose it's possible that any procession that goes down a public street in Pasadena, California is free for whoever wants to cover it, but isn't there a rights issue for this thing?

Only City TV, for example, got to cover the Santa Claus Parade in Toronto on Nov. 23rd of this past year, even though it was openly staged on the streets of the city.

How can two major American networks both have the rights to this annual event?

That has been going on for as long as I can remember.  CNN is also covering it.

Well, son of a gun.  Something that's not a case of corporate greed.

I don't recall the same parade ever being on two or more networks at once. But then it's not something I often pay attention to, so I'll take your word for it. Just seems weird to me that they'd both go to the trouble and expense of covering it if it's not exclusive.

Re: Two U.S. Networks Showing The Same Special - How Is That Possible?

Actually KTLA Channel 5 Los Angeles has the best coverage.  KTLA is a super station. The “live” broadcast is commercial free, They also stream the parade and have a separate “band camera” so tht people can watch the bands perform without the announcers.  This is done as a service to people in all of the communities whose have family who march in the bands.  Throught New Years day there are 3 or 4 rebroadcasts of the parade on ktla.  These repeats have commercial clusters but the strangest thing occurs.  KTLA literally “freezes” the tape of the parade at the precise spot where it stopped for commercials, so viewers don’t lose any of the parade.  Leeza Gibbons is one of the hosts.  KTLA seems to have more cameras although this year they did not have the Goodyear Blimp because of rainy conditions.  It has only rained on 11 occassions over the last 100 plus years of the parade.  I don’t know whether KTLA geoblocks the telecast but you might try to watch it with a VPN.
