TSN Host Dissses World Junior Hockey Tourney

My ears perked up today listening to the afternoon show on TSN 690 in Montreal when one of the hosts spoke negatively about the upcoming World Junior Hockey Championships

The host said his "fandom for the tournamet has waned" mostly because Canada's very best junior-aged players will be unavailable to wear the maple leaf. That's because they remain with the NHL teams that drafted them.

The World Juniors are held annually during the holiday period & provide some excellent viewing

They are an absolute cash cow for Hockey Canada and TSN, the exclusive provider in Canada

Why a TSN on air host would throw shade on their marquee event puzzles me

Don't slag the friggin' thing

Maybe keep your mouth shut?

I think a little bit of on-air journalism is rare and refreshing.  So little of it these days, especially on conglomerate-owned outlets.

That's refreshing and he's 100% correct...what pisses me off is watching NHL/NFL/MLB broadcasters afraid to bite the hand that feeds them by not criticizing their league they cover on things that should rightfully be criticized...HNIC panels and and Blue Jays baseball broadcasts on Rogers Sportsnet are especially full of pussy cowards shilling for their overlords that own the Leafs and Jays.

Honestly, I think Canada is the only country that cares about the World Junior Champioship. TSN gets monster ratings every year.  I wonder what the numbers are like for the NHL Network which broadcasts the tournament in the U.S. Internationally, IIHF.TV carries all tournament games in countries that don't have a local broadcaster. I don't have the numbers to back it up, but my gut feeling is the ratings for the World Juniors are significantly lower outside of Canada.

I think you’re right mace. TSN has made it a big thing in Canada and the timing is pretty good since it starts Boxing Day when there’s not too many TV options, especially in sports. I also think that people in other countries spend their holidays out and about, not plopped in front of a TV, and hockey is more popular with Canadians than in those nations.

I agree with him. This tournament is no longer relevant. No Russia either.

Canada can't seem to win this thing anymore.

Re: TSN Host Dissses World Junior Hockey Tourney

The old bogeymen - undisciplined play & poorly timed penalties -  did them in again. Ivankovic was stellar in net, but Misa & McKenna let them down when they needed them most.
How badly does this affect McKenna's 'first overall' status?
