NBC To Start Another Subscription Streaming Service
It's not like Peacock has exactly been a huge hit, although it's doing OK. Now NBC is trying it again, this time with an all news offering that you can pay for if you want. It remains to be seen, with so many of their services already available online for free, just how many will consider signing up for this.

That's good but it's not on par with Netflix and Disney+. I've looked to see what Peacock had to offer and even if it was available in Canada - which it's not - I don't think there's enough on it to make it worth the price.

Oh, wow. I would have never guessed that many. Disney+ has 59 million in the US, so they're up there.

The Olympics, nearly all Premier League games, a few exclusive NFL games, World Cup spanish rights, NBA games, and The Office. Plus they offer bundles with Apple TV. It has Disney+ beat for new content, but Disney has a massive back catalogue that trumps Peacock or Apple

Actually, there are two major streaming services I can think of that Canadians don't have (legal) access to.
Peacock is one. Hulu is the other. Ironically, Hulu started out in life as a freebie, the place you could go to watch many network shows if you missed them. But over the years, it morphed into a pay service and still produces a number of half decent shows, including "Only Murders In The Building," with Steve Martin and Martin Short.
But not if you're in Canada, where the rights to many of its best programs have been sold to other streamers here.

There's a long way to go to figuring out how to make this all work. 41 million subscribers would seem like a guarantee to make money, but how many are actually paying anything close to full pice? Services are being bundled together or included in phone plans. Peacock is free to anyone who pays for Walmart+.

Disney dropped their Disney Star brand internationally, and in Canada this became Hulu back on Oct. 10th. Hard to believe Peacock can't make money with 41 million subscribers! Maybe too many freebies or discounts? The Peacock "lite" packages with commercials might not be bringing in enough ad dollars.

Counting on ad-dollars to fund anything that provides popular original content, other than YouTube, is a dead-end.

The "41 million" number is paid subscribers. If you're NBC.... you attribute as much of your program acquisition costs to your streamer so that wall street goes easier on you for the losses. As a whole, they're doing fine. Comcast's media segment EBITDA was 28% last quarter

There is certainly no lack of promotional ads for it on CTV and CTV2.

With 3 million subscribers, Crave has been profitable since 2019 when they started airing HBO programming as well. (I looked this up, but my buddy who works there says they’re doing okay as well, he’s still employed!)
