The story of how a legendary L.A. radio station - KROQ - came back from the dead to reclaim a ratings crown is an amazing tale. So how did they do it? By going back to basics and giving an audience they chased away during COVID exactly what it wanted - their favourite personalities and their favourite music back.
"The expectation of the KROQ brand is Foo Fighters, Chili Peppers, Linkin Park and Green Day. [Kaplan] kicked all those bands to the curb in favor of these new TikTok-flavor-of-the-moment bands. That’s not what people expect or want from KROQ. It’s just getting back to what people expect.
"Everyone goes, ‘the station used to play a lot more new music,’ or ‘the station used to be about discovery.’ All those things are still true. It’s just that, our audience is not 12 to 24. Our audience is 25 to 54. These are the people that grew up with KROQ. We’re not chasing something that we’re not going to probably get any longer. We’re going to satisfy the people that are still here.”
Are there lessons there for heritage rock stations like CFNY or even Q107? Maybe. Will they learn them? That remains to be seen. It's worked so far in Windsor with the return of 89X, whose comeback is among those stations also mentioned in the article.

I hope you don't mind me posting this as it may seem like self-promotion.
However - has been doing this for 11 years. That is why people are tuning in from around the world. With DJ names such as Ivar Hamilton, Earl Jive and more. And yes we also feature bits from Pete and Geets throughout each day.
But we don't have commercials! It will cost you about 23 cents a day
And you can listen for two days and not hear the same song twice. Back in the day at CFNY that was 24 hours. :-)
Plus proudly - our imaging voice is the same as the voice at The Spirit Of Radio back in the day.

Perfectly legit self promotion, David. And you get the bonus of not having to answer to anyone in upper management. Because I imagine that's you! Glad it's working out so well!

I've been there from the beginning, and it's pretty simple... if you liked CFNY back in the day, you'll LOVE nythespirit.com. I have my gripes, as befits a 10+ years listener, but it's the music of my life, just like CFNY was before they ruined it.
David has missed a string of shows lately due to health issues (and I know about those), so it was great to hear him back on the air this weekend.
If you're reading, so happy you're back. Now, about that gap on Friday nights... ![]()
