PBS To Celebrate Itself In 3-Hr. Long Special On WNED

PBS has been bruised and battered by budget cuts, but it's not out. As if to prove it, the educational network is throwing itself a three hour long party called "We Heart Public Television," on Sunday, Nov. 30 from 7-10 PM. (With an additional airing from 2-5 AM on Dec. 3rd.)

What's it about? From the website description:

"A star-studded cast will honor 55 remarkable years of public television. Featuring music director Rickey Minor and appearances by Josh Groban, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ziggy Marley, Lily Tomlin, Noel Paul Stookey, Rick Steves, David Foster and Katherine MacPhee, Joe Bonamassa, Lucy Dacus, Celtic Woman, Lindsay Ell, Sarah Silverman, Martha Plimpton and so many more, this program celebrates the extraordinary musical artists and personalities who have graced PBS stages and screens, showcasing the cultural richness that public media and local PBS stations offer all Americans."

It's a lot of DVR space, but it could be worth a look. For obvious reasons, it would not surprise me if some of those three hours were heavy with pledge breaks.

If you're interested in this, there's another PBS special that same week that might be worth your time.

On Saturday Nov. 29th at 6 PM, Channel 17 is showing a special called "60s and 70s Soul Celebration." It's a compilation of the best performances from some of the greatest names in soul music, and it also runs for three hours.

"The legends of 60's and 70's soul music return to perform their biggest hits. Featuring The Temptations, James Brown, Patti LaBelle, The Chi-Lites, The Spinners, Sam Moore and more in this first-time-ever classic R&B and soul compilation from 30 years of the TJL archive."

It doesn't get much more vintage than that.

If you miss it, there's another chance to catch it at midnight on Dec. 5th.

Is this something new or re-packaged. I see a great deal of PBS listings for 50's/60's/70's music specials. Some are clips from the Ed Sullivan days. Others are more recent with the artists performing their hits in front of a mostly aging baby boomer audience.

Not sure but I suspect it's as much as possible original members performing their hits in front of an audience. It's in the description as a "compilation" from previous shows, so I'm guessing that's what they'll show.
